Since I don't have a copy of "Da Book" yet, would anyone be able to tell me how many quarts of motor oil to add after draining and replacing oil filter. The previous owner thought about 30, but wasn't really sure. Can anyone recomend a good brand of oil. I use Shell Rotella in my diesel truck. What brand oil does DD motors run best on?? I want to use the correct brand 40 weight, one that will hold up under all conditions. I plan on attending the Eagle rally next week and need to change oil soon. Thanks- Doug Woodin |

My 4106 w/ the 8V71 uses 28 quarts with a filter change, or 7 gallons. I use Chevron Delo 100, straight 40wt, rated CD-2. As Bob mentioned, DDA recommends straight oil, not multi-grade, preferably with an 85% ash content, in the two-cycle diesels. Since you have an Eagle, here's a tip to check to see if your dipstick is accurate: When fully inserted, the "full" mark should be 1" below the block/oil pan seam. Enjoy the Eagle rally! RJ is spot on with the info about the dipstick. Regardless what the marks may say, 'full' is one inch below the pan/engine line regardless of how much oil the pan may hold. Over filling is useless. My 8V71 took about 7 Gall w/ filter change. Scott |

I don't like sounding like a bone head, but. How do you know what is one inch below the pan/engine line? Please explain your viewing angle. Thanks, Ron |

Ron, The messy way is to pull the oil pan and measure how far below the bottom of the block the dipstick protrudes. Also gives you a chance to clean out the crud at the bottom, and practice putting back the oil pan w/o any leaks. . . 8^) The semi-messy way is to have a helper hold the top part of the stick alongside the tube as far down as he/she can reach, and from underneath, you hold it against the tube and see how far down it protrudes. Then, with your third hand, measure the protrusion with a tape measure. After you've got your measurement, get out the GoJo to clean up. . . Have fun! RJ |
