Boy what a problem, decided to have the brakes adjusted for the first time by a truck shop. Drove the bus home two days later left for trip, drove 100 miles stopped at rest area, stopped set park brake, shut off engine. The coach did not move again untill a shop sent a man out to fix. Still don't know what locked up brakes but man had an air gun to break two bolts loose then coach finally would move. No shop claims must b a valve problem. Thoughts on this anyone. Drove another 50 miles seemed kind of ok. larry

Hello Larry.

What bolts did the man break loose with the air gun? And, by "break loose" what do you mean?

At this point, I doubt that your troubles were related to the visit to the truck shop.

Give us some more details, and we'll try to help!

As a fellow busnut, I'd encourage you to be getting yourself an education on your 30 year old vehicle before others educate you for you, if you know what I mean!
Truck mechanics won't have a clue what to do on your old coach, only the best of the old bus mechanics might remember, and they will all take your money for stuff you can do yourself. Buses are not trucks.

You can easily adjust your own brakes, and you can easily make a set of ramps to drive the bus up on to do that and other under body maintenance safely.

Or, at least, find another busnut near you to pay to help you!

happy coaching!

the slack adjustor bolts had tightened up so tight the air gun had to be used to loosen, once the adjustor bolts were loosened the brakes eased off and he readjusted and brakes and parking brake seemed to be working fine except for an 8 second delay for park brake to release.
Rite now bus is in Boise ID, so when I go to retreave Sunday I will know if brakes release.

Larry, you stated the they had to take an air gun to back off the slack adjusters, did you smell burnt brakes when you stopped at the end of your trip? or when you went out side did you feel any heat coming iff any of the brake drums. this is why some of us use a heat temp sencer gun to chech for this kind of thing, if the slack adjusters were set up that tightit could be that the guy did not set them right or it could be that he never cleaned out the retainer clamp before he tryed to set up the brakes, you should take an air gun and blow all the dirt and grime out of them before tring to adjust them. a good way to loosen this crud is spray the bolt heads and the retainer clip with W D 40 and them apply air with your air nozzel to be sure that you get all the dirt out. besure that when you are finished with your adjustment that you pack the retainer clanp with greese , this prevents moisture and dirt from getting in. also if they had to put an air gun no the adjustment bolt, when you get home take your slack adjusters off and do a visual inspection of them to be sure that there is no damage done to the internal parts as if you turn the bolt the wrong way with an air gun you can mess them up real good. also be sure that that retainer pops out anound the head of the retainer bolt when you are finised with your adjustment before you put the greese in. good luuk mel 4104

Hello Larry.

Does your bus have automatic slack adjusters that have malfunctioned, or been treated wrong by any chance? There are auto slacks out there that can be damaged by putting a wrench on them the wrong way!

I am very suspicious of the adjusters being so tight that they required an air gun, after someone had "serviced" them so shortly a time ago.

I would be very worried that something is broken, or otherwise worn/seized/deteriorated that I might want to think hard about getting replacement adjusters.

You need to get some experienced advice that is trustworthy on this one!

happy coaching!

Larry -

"parking brake seemed to be working fine except for an 8 second
delay for park brake to release. "

Was that after a full depression of the brake pedal after hitting
the brake release?

Larry, As John stated it sounds like you "cammed over" What happens is the slack adjuster was readjusted by the truck shop, That will cause the S cam to over travel on the roller of the brake shoes if the shoes are near or over their service life.

If you can get under the bus take a look and see if you have at least 1/2" of shoes left.

Also I have seen slack adjusters that won't hold an adjustment. I am also afraid of the Air Impact wrench situation. I would replace them.
