A couple of weeks ago I took my 9 year old grandson on a camping/fishing trip. We had a good time and the 1984 Eagle model 10 ran great. We were driving back home on I-26 East of Asheville, NC between 60 and 65 MPH when we hit a swell or swag or something in the road that caused the bus to take a pretty good bounce. I had let off the throttle trying to figure out what was going on but when I saw we were okay, pressed it down again. We both immediately heard a new sound coming from the drive train area of the bus not heard before. It was a rumbling/roaring kind of sound. I let off the throttle and the noise stopped. The noise was completely dependent on being under power with speed having no effect. My first assumption was that the muffler had been damaged in someway. I pulled off at the first rest stop and got out to look but could see or hear nothing unusual. There were no signs of anything hitting the road or any signs of exhaust damage. I stopped once more a few miles down the road and looked again still to no avail. With everything seeming to perform as normal I decided to continue home and check it out in the shop. After a close inspection of the exhaust system I still see nothing wrong and no leaks in it. A friend suggested it could have compressed the drive shaft to hard when bottoming out on the bounce and damaged it somehow. I do not see anything that looks wrong with the drive shaft and the joints do not seem loose. Anybody got a clue as to what this could be and where I should look? Can a bounce like that damage an axle or differential? How is the best way to test the drive shaft?
While trying to check out the drive shaft I had all the rear wheels off the ground and was spinning one side. This caused the other side to rotate backwards, which I expected, but the drive shaft does not turn and I know that the HT740 Allison is in neutral. I locked the driver side wheels with the brakes so I could turn the other but then the drive shaft kept them from turning. Shouldn’t the drive shaft turn in neutral or does it just turn so much stuff in there that it is real hard to turn?
Thanks for any feedback.
