does the valve supposed to have a tiny hole in the front of the bottom part of the valve that allows air to escape?

mines got the same leak in addition to the gasket leaking. I'm guessing that being almost 60 it's probably gone bad. Mine leaks all the time but just a very little. The compressor can more than keep up at idle.


While we're here (3751 guys) how much oil pressure do your rigs run? I'm making about 40 when she cold and around 20 warm and that's at speed.

Nick, you should make sure your gauge is accurate. If it is, it sounds like you are not maintaining the oil pressure that you should.

Your manual might have a minimum spec. An engine manual will have a minimum hot pressure that you should be able to maintain.

Nick if you have the old style engine it should make 40lb. hot at gov speed. 20 lb. idel. Newer engines are a bit higher.

The air hole shouldn't leak constantly. Mine did, too.

Get a new one from Mohawk or Luke, since the old ones are "unobtainium", parts wise.

I agree, your oil pressure sounds a bit low. Do you have the mech. gauge in the engine compt. to verify the reading?

Nick,

My 4104 with 671 gets about 50psi on startup and keeps around 40psi at cruise of 60-65mph. When the oil level starts to get low (Near the low mark) it drops to around 30-35psi.

This is with CF-2, 30w. I can't find 40w anywhere.

Add oil to the full mark and see if this increases the pressure.

You may be running on AIR , not oil.
The only place I have ever found the TECHNIQUE for "checking the oil" is in a 6-71 manual for the USN.

The engine is shut down and the oil level checked, RIGHT THEN!

This is not how most folks do it , as most seem to wait for the lube to drain back into the crankcase giving a higher reading.

Therefore many folks may be running 2 gallons LOW!

When the oil level is kept up , by Da Book ,

YES in the AM walkaround the oil will seem "overfull" IT'S NOT!

While this will not bring UP the oil pressure at idle (correct oil should) it will keep the pressure steady at cruise, any bouncing of the pressure at cruise is AIR entrainment !

mine doesn't bounce it just steadly drops the longer I travel i.e. when I left N.W. Ohio I was running 40 psi when I stoped for the night in southern KY or norther TN (can't remeber) I was running about 25. The next morning back up to about 40 and by the time I got to south GA I was below 20. Yesterday it started at 40 plus and after ten miles or so it was down to around 20. Now as soon as I shut her down I opened the doors and checked it. It was about half way up the hash marks which is probably two gallon less than when I started proving you point Fred cause there's no way I blew out that much (no sign of that much oil comming out). I'm guessing now I'm going to rebuild her try to fix where ever the fuel is getting in and try it agian.

I know about platigage but there's no where to use it on an intacked engine. How else to you check clearances?

I suspect your oil pressure is as good as, or better, than the majority of the rigs on the road. I wouldn't go looking for trouble if I were you. Make SURE you are using straight 40w cf2 oil. It really does matter.

what is cf2 I never heard that term. I'm running 15w 40 rotella but with all the fuel in it now I'm going to have to change it again. I need to stop my leaks first though.

Nick, the plastigage is usefull for dropping the pan.

If you've got fuel in the oil, you need to deal with that and get the right oil in the engine.

After that will be time enough to figure out your oil pressure.

To find out where the fuel is coming from is not too hard, the procedure is in DA Book.

Basically you plug the return line and fill the system with fuel under pressure 60psi?DD sells a small hand pump if you have no other way.

I have seen folks use a fire extinguisher (normally pressureized water type ) with diesel fuel as a leak tester and a fuel system primer.

Wipe off each jumper tube with TP till really clean and then put a square of TP round each fitting.
The wet ones after pressurizing are the ones that were overtorqued, or cracked and are leaking.

With the CORRECT oil and the replacement jumpers fitted I would certainly go for a ride before R&R the main & rod bearings.

2 stroke Oil is avilable at your friendle $$$ DD dealer , just BE SURE to use the gallon cans that are marked CF-2 and not the 5 gal pail stuff for Ser 60's.

Rotella also makes a 40wt that sez its CF2 on the lable , from any NAPA that will get it for you.

Change out the lube oil filter too AFTER you fix the head fuel leaks.
