I am considering purchasing a therm king diesel for my 2 bearing 15kw generator head. I had purchased a 16 hp kubota diesel not realizing the hp of the engine and that it would be to small for the 15kw. I'm sure there is different versions of thermo king engines. What is approx. hp of these engines/ Weight, rpm, and what could I expect to pay or offer for one of these units. I have found 2 of them at two different places and they both want me to make them an offer which tells me these aren't fast movers in the truck wrecking yard. Thanks Ray |

Do you really need 15 kw? The 16 hp should give you a minimum of 8-10 kw continously and several more kw for inrush loads. I had a 12 kw on my Eagle but never really needed more than about 6 at any one time. Richard |

Thanks Richard, I've been looking at package generators and the hp is higher than what I thought it should be. If the 16 hp would give me 8-10 kw I would be happy.I'm surrounded by engineers with opinions what do I really need. Would the 16 hp power a 10kw head if so I can go for a smaller one as this thing is heavy. Thanks Ray |

The size of the alternator is not really important as long as it is as big as, or bigger than the kw output you need. So to answwer your question, yes a 10 kw alternator would be appropriate for a 16 hp engine. The rule of thumb in building gensets is 2 hp for each kw up to about 20 hp (10kw). After that I used 1.5 hp per kw up to about 100. Richard |

I asked a TK mechanic once and he said the 4 cyl units were 29 to 32 hp on average. So one of the units would probably handle a 15kw head OK.... |
