I have an onan 10kw diesel with 500 hrs on it.It will run for about 20 seconds then shuts off.The code says it is being over loaded and to shut the breaker off and it should run,but it still will not run.Im dry camping and really need to get this thing running.Any suggestions? |

I had this problem with another type of genset and it was due to no AC output. It was designed so that if there was no AC after several seconds it would shut off. Check with a meter and see if you are getting AC at the breaker. Also, low oil pressure can cause it to shutdown so check your oil level. Richard |

I have an Onan diesel that had a similar problem but mine is an older one. Doesn't have the fancy readouts. I had a voltage regulator board go nuts and caused the engine-run hold relay that senses the a.c. output to burn up on the main controller board. The voltage spiked to 170 volts and fried the relay windings. The opposite could be true also, check your output voltage if its down around 102 volts then the regulator has failed in the off mode and the engine run relay will drop out and shut down the engine. I suspect you have something wrong that will take more than a field repair to correct. If you lost the relay or voltage regulator you may damage the generator section or fry your appliances. Hope that helps a little.... |

If the engine isn't coming up to power, any amount of draw will result in an "overload". Try a couple cans of diesel injector cleaner and fuel conditioner and maybe a new filter, besides checking for a restricted air cleaner? |

With the breaker off, there should not be any draw, or load on the engine, so I do not think that is the problem. Is there any AC output during the 20 second run time when measured directly at the circuit breaker input terminals with the breaker turned off? If not, then probably bad voltage regulator or brushes if the unit is old enough to have brushes. Have you tried disconnecting the lead from the oil pressure sender? Low oil pressure will shut some systems down. Warning, do not leave this lead disconnected, in case it is actually low oil pressure. Richard |

The problem is a bad load controler.Im in Flagstaff waiting for the part to be overnited. The bad news is the controler cost is $850.00.To say the least I am not real happy with Onan right now. |

If you were handy with electronics you could get a new "Universal" AVR for $85 from these guys, but it would take some rewiring to get it to go http://www.solesco.com/AVRmenu.html (I love these things- they are cheap and work quite excellently! Highly recommended) OUCH on the onan part... they really mark stuff up but if you don't have technical skills, you pays da money... Best of luck |
