Been looking at their countertop cd400 model. There is someone local selling them for $188. Does anyone here have any experience with these machines? The main selling features for me are the price, the size, the water consumption (very important) and the availablity. However, all of that means nothing if it's cheaply made and won't last more than a few years. |

NOISE COUNTS !! In our place in FL we have a great old SS Hobart washer. Does just fine , but were reluctant to operate it because of the noise. You are in a 1/10 sized space in a coach so NOISE might be a big concern. Hear one run before any outlay!! FAST FRED |

I have to agree with FF on this. I recently had to replace the dishwasher in my home and bought one at Lowes. Took it home and installed it and it about run us out of the house it was so noisy. Took it back and bought another brand and it is so quiet it is hard to tell it is running. As a point of interest, in 15 years we never used the dishwasher installed in our Eagle except for a storage bin for paper plates and paper cups. It seems we never had enough dirty china dishes at any one time to justify using the dishwasher, or we would have had to wait a few days to have it full and then we would be out of china, so invariably I ended up washing by hand the china, silverware and pots and pans we utilized. I can second that. We just HAD to have a dishwasher, as well as an apartment full size washer and dryer in ours. In all the years of use, the dishwasher was only used for pot storage, and the washer and dryer were still unused when we sold it, and we lived in it for 6 months at a time! |

I once did a load of laundry in the DW of my last class A - but never once used it to wash a single dish - I'm a big fan of disposable utensils - FWIW -Niles |

We use our dishwasher (18" unit) almost every day. It's a Kenmore. |

Phil: the CD400 is made in Japan by Panasonic, I believe. Stainless steel interior. I could not find any web-site reviews of it, but would venture a guess that it's pretty good quality. I think, as others have noted, that whether it is practical to have one depends on if, when, and how frequently it will be used rather than its cost and durability. These are simply matters of convenience. But when it comes to convenience there are other things to consider: If you plan to affix it to the countertop, what do you need more - counter space or another apliance? If you plan to build it in will winterization become a problem? If you plan to keep it portable and stow it for travel - it's not too big, but it weighs about 50#. Your decision. Incidentaly, I too have a Kenmore stackable washer and dryer (unstacked) in my 4106. In 6 years I have used the the dryer a few times. I could have easily used the washer on occasion, but didn't feel that once or twice a year would justify having to figure out how to winterize it later. I live in Alaska. tg 4106 1888 |

Thanks for the replies. I plan to live aboard my bus full time when it's ready (I'm trying to save to buy a house) and will use the dishwasher (along with washer and dryer) on a regular basis. This machine is attractive to me because it is small and can be built into a cabinet as a permanent installation. I'm single and plan to be that way for a while so running a load once a day or so will be the regular use. While noise would be a problem, I usually won't be around to hear it as I'd start a load while I'm on my way out of the house for work or some other occasion, then be able to enjoy clean dishes on my return. Right now I'll use it in my studio apartment this winter (which doesn't have a built in dishwasher) and install it into the bus when I finish the kitchen cabinets next summer. I hope to have the bus ready for full time living next September. By that time I'll have a power-pole and city utility dependent coach to live in while I work on the independence systems like tanks, generator and solar. So far, I have a propane oven, sink, disposal unit, inverters, refridgerator and now the dishwasher. Still need to find a washer-dryer, and a propane cooktop to replace the one I had before it was stolen. |

It's all personal preference. Half use it half don't. I started using my Eagle without a dishwasher, but plumbed a cabinet for it. The wife said, "we need one" after a few trips and that's all it took for me. I bought an 18" and we use it to store dirty dishes and wash as needed. We like to use china to make it feel more like home. (That's just our preference). I usually run it off the inverter while underway when my house bank is merged to the alternator. I think it pulls about 12 amps when the pump motor and heating coil are both on, so it's not too heavy on the inverter. As far as noise, it's not bad in my opinion. Good luck David Anderson |

I thought about going the 18" diswasher route, but decided I wanted something smaller that uses less water. The cd400 uses 2.2 gallons per wash cycle, which is something I can live with when boondocking. A full size dishwasher uses on the order of 7 to 9 gallons per wash cycle. An 18" unit should be right in the middle somewhere. |

"As a point of interest, in 15 years we never used the dishwasher installed in our Eagle except for a storage bin for paper plates and paper cups. " Same deal with the folks that installed bathtubs , only use was for storage . FAST FRED |

We use our Kenmore 18" dishwasher almost everyday when we are travelling. It's relatively quiet and we use it on the "water miser" cycle. It gets the dishes clean and doesn't use all that much water. Dave D (MC-8) |
