What BRAND of antifreeze do you folks use?
Do you get the Low Silicate Precharged? or Do you add a SCA to the mix?
I asked my local NAPA, They looked at me like I was from Mars. Mostly kids work there LOL.
If you guys can tell me what exactly to ask for from them maybe they won't be so lost.
I know I am supposed to use a low silicate type with distilled water around a 50/50 mix with a SCA added, But try and explain that to NON bus people.
I looked on the drums of antifreeze that we have at work and found they are using automotive type antifreeze in the lumber lifts and road tractors. Glad it ain't my money.

Detroit has a spec number for antifreeze (I don't have it handy, but it was on my header tank and in my books and it is in their web site) and I have purchased it at Pilot truck stops and also have gone to the local DD dealer. You might not believe this but Pilot was cheaper.

Diesel Coolant as compare to Automotive
http://www.finalube.com/fina_check/fina_check_coolant.htm
A quote from Fina site;
“Silicates: Silicates protect several metals in cooling systems. Automotive antifreeze typically contains large amounts of silicate. Use of automotive antifreeze and SCA leads to additive dropout, which causes plugging of radiators, heaters, and restricts engine coolant passages. Sudden introduction of large amounts of silicate through additions of automotive antifreeze or large doses of nitrite-borate SCA (high silicates) may cause rapid failure of water pump seals. Reports of low silicates and low water hardness in used coolants can be misleading. Both silicates and hardness compounds will precipitate out in the presence of each other. For an accurate evaluation of silicate levels, new antifreeze must be tested.”

I understand how it all works! My problem is getting my local parts houses to grasp the concept that I need a antifreeze the conforms to ASTM D-6210 precharge or ASTM D-4985 SCA mix.
I am hoping that someone can give me a BRANDNAME or PART NUMBER to ask for seeing how I live in the boonies and I don't speak hillbilly that well.
NAPA is lost. Carquest not far behind.
I will try the brands that you listed Jerry, Maybe I can get a match with something they can get.
Thanks, Dale

DD markets the red pre=mixed stuff under the name powercool, I believe. Texaco also markets it but be careful because they have 1 red pre-mix for the car standard and 1 for diesel. The red stuff is good for 5-6 years. I believe Shell may market something also. BE SURE u do not have sca filters on your coolong system. I replaced my filters with non-sca filter elements and only change them when I break the cooling system open.
