Well, now that I have a bit of free time, I decided to repair that power steering problem I had last trip. I need to take the control valve apart and rebuild it... years ago one of you Crown guys sent me a breakdown and some info on it but for the life of me I can't find it.

It's NOT the steering type that has all the hydraulic guts built right into the steering gears... instead it's the older type that has a control valve assy on the end of the main tie-rod going from the steering box to the axle, and a hydraulic ram that pushes on the cross-rod to do the work.

I dont even know what the silly thing is called or who made it. My Crown manual is too new and doesnt cover this one... 1962 to about 1972 or so...

Anyone got a sheet or three on this thing? I'd love to find a blowup parts diagram, and installation instructions (as I remember there are some critical adjustments need be made to get it working properly)

Thanks
Gary

Why not update it away from that power assist arrangement to a newer integrated steering box. I know that is not what you are asking. As a classic mustang owner, I can tell you many of my collegues are installing kits with integrated power racks and other options to rid themselves of the assist type systems. I think after you do it, you will be happier with the result.

Um, Kevin, that's a LOT of messing around with a system that otherwise works. A few O-rings are a lot easier to replace than a whole steering box and a ton of hydraulics... I guess that's why...
Maybe someday but not this year. Adding jakes was enough taking apart bus guts for me for this season... I'm into the "driving it and enjoying vacation phase now", and if possible, not as many major modifications.

WHEEE !!

I took the suspect valve off the bus, and got thru the grease and crud to find that the thing is made by Garrison; further looking on the internet told me that they are still around only 100 miles away, and a quick phone call netted me a full rebuild kit for a whopping $35 bucks!

So I'm a happy camper...

Gary..my '74 Crown has the same type of power assist steering as yours. (I think). I will ask around the truck shops up here in SW Oregon. CROWNS FOREVER!!! (VIN 37317)
