Three questions;

Is it worthwhile to try to weld a hole in the top of a muffler in a 4104 about the size of a quarter? The muffler appears to be in good shape otherwise but I don't have it out yet. This is a dual exhaust and a 6-71.

What is the cost of a muffler in a dual setup?

What are the pros and cons of straight pipes, are they even legal?

Gusc, whether it's worthwhile depends on just how thin the metal is. If there's some meat left, a wirefeed might make a good temporary repair.

We repaired ours when we made our run to Florida in March of last year, and it's still holding. There's probably 10 to 15 thousand miles on it, so far.

We did find out that it would be easy to spend $500 to $750 in parts on our single muffler if we change out everything that we should.

For what it's worth.

Gus, I think that if you have a turbo, you can run without a muffler. At least my Eagle was like this when I got it. I eventually added a muffler because it was pretty loud with one. It sure sounded great coming down a mountain with the Jakes on though.

Which exhaust setup do you have now,the single
muffler ,the stacked dual mufflers or the true
dual exhaust w/ 2 manifolds & 2 mufflers.

Thanks for responses.

I don't know the shape of the metal yet since I can't get it loose from the manifold. It is now soaking in PB and will try again tomorrow.

Luke has quoted me a price of $247.52 which isn't too bad so I will probably replace it if I ever get it off and out.

As you may know on a 6-71 the two mufflers are vertical between the firewall and the engine, there is just barely enough space to get the muffler clamp off and it is rusted firmly to the exh manifold.

Out may be the big problem, any ideas? I can't tell if there is enough space to get the muffler out the right side over the shift rods and trans. Can It be removed through the removable plate in the ceiling of the engine compartment?

No turbo or Jake. With a Jake a muffler is almost a necessity..
