I was thinking, how about a pair of used airliner first class seats for extra forward facing passenger seats. They have seat belts, shouldn't be all that hard to get used, have nice footrests and should be pretty comfortable. I know there are dismantlers in Mohave, CA. Any thoughts? Anyone know of a direct source to get them. I am thinking one pair for my family facing forward. Still have to buy the bus, but the one I am looking at could use a pair up front.

Aircraft seats are far less substantial in a crash than car or bus seats.

The aircraft has NO heavy place to fasten those hundreds of seat belts , so there mostly there for turbulance not a Quick Stop.

The aircraft will crumple far more than any bus , lowering the belt loads .

But those First Class Sleepers are NICE , but at about $4000 each when new.

I wouldn't buy new. I have seen someone selling used ones for pretty reasonable. I would also secure the belts to the floor with reinforcement. They seem like if you found the right ones to be a decent option since they would be a nice side by side pair. I took a look on Ebay. Here is a pair without the leg rests for pretty reasonable.

My Biased thoughts - MD80 1st class seats are only comfortable when compared to coach... most (in the US)do not have footrests and are not that comfy.

Look for international seats from a 747, or other widebody. (L1011, DC10, 757, A340, or an older stretch DC 8 come to mind). Lufthansa has nice Recaro seats that are comfy, BA, Delta, American, and United international first class seats are very nice. I am not sure of the voltages these seats run, so look into that if you want the power back massagers, footrests, and so on to work.

I still maintain that the 1990 (give or take a few years) Chrysler New Yorker seats that Fred Hobe recommended to me are the BEST ones out there.

$50 bucks a pair at your local junkyard, large selection of colors and materials (leather too!)
Fully electric

I drive 12 hours at a time in them and never get fatigued, and EVERYONE who sits in them says

......WOW......

Try it. They're really nice and really cheap and I've flown in 1st class planes a lot... wouldn't use one of those if you paid me....

Regarding voltages for the aircraft seats, I suspect you will find that they are 400 hertz instead of 60 hertz. And a 60 to 400 hertz frequency converter would be hard to come by economically.

I vote for other options than an aircraft seat for comfort reasons. 1st class is not all that comfortable. My Honda Civic is more comfortable to sit in. I travel constantly and travel 1st class several times a year. They are not that great of a seat (but the booze is free, so it is not all that bad)

If you want a good seat for just sitting, the specialty seats are the best buy (IMHO Steelcraft or similar). Even the New Yorker car seat, while a great driver seat, may not make the best passenger seat (but to try it and be wrong is not as painful as other options).

You pays your moneys and you takes your choice!

Oh yeah, the New Yorker makes an amazing passenger seat too...just ask anyone who's been on those 12 hour drives with me. Everyone loves em.
Like Doug says, it's certainly cheap to try out...

I think what I am looking at is sort of a compact love seat with arm rests and retractable leg rests to face forward for a view of the road. A set of van rear seats might also be an option if they are nice ones. My favorite seats were those in our 94 SHO Taurus. My wife also agrees on them being the best, far better then our more recent Volvo. Late 80's and early 90's upper end Ford seats seem to be the best I have run accross but that is just me.

Plop your butt into some of the coaches ORIGONAL seats ,

no footrest but definatly designed for those 24 hour sits.

WE tried e'm all at ralleys and stuck with a replacement of quality bus seats.

Works for me,

All butts are different and which is the most comfortable is personal, but I agree with FF and am looking for the RH forward original seat pair for my 4104.

The problem is shipping, I'm in North AR so I need to find one reasonably close like in MO or AR to make it financially reasonable.
