Anyone running straight pipes on a non-turbo 6-71 conversion? Is it even legal? |

I run a straight pipe on a tug boat And I can tell you that you DO NOT do this on a bus, over water you can hear it for 2 miles on a windy day. at 1400 rpm. |

I've run mine without pipes or muffler just straight out of the manifold and it's not that loud. |

Believe it or not Detroit Diesel still publishes guide lines on the necessary/desired exhaust pipe length on their various models of 2-stroke mills. We learned this stuffing 453's into pickups. Sometimes you can even "tune" the exhaust system to give your maximum power or torque at a particular rpm range. A longer pipe helps the low end torque. And.....sometimes you get the most power by having a little bit of back pressure (like a muffler) that "pulses" thru the exhaust, sucking gas out of the mill. Go to www.detroitdiesel.com to learn more. |

Drove it some, a few miles. I've got a few small holes in the bulk head and it got pretty smokey inside. I drove it from Kentucky to south Ga with the end of the muffler blown off and heard no difference there, no performance change either. |

gusc....sorrry I did NOT say that you need to communicate with DD to get the info you need. The website was assumed (by me, unfortunately) to be the beginning link to do soosss. Sorry for not telling you. Henry of CJ. |

Henry, No sorry necessary. I found a lot of info but nothing about exhausts. Most websites are too involved for me and I manage to waste a lot of time on them looking for something specific. In these cases I usually give up and email the owners. Most of the time this is much faster because too many websites are mazes. Nick, Thanks. I know what you mean about smoke. My hole was about the size of a quarter in the top muffler end and I was getting enough smoke to make it very unpleasant. |
