Hi ya'll! Another question for my friend with a 1985 NJT MCI-9. In order to remove the front wheels from the brake drums what direction are the lug nuts turned? Clockwise, or counter clockwise? Thank you all, once again. Michael 4905/MD |

Michael, If there is an "L" marking on the wheel stud bolt you turn the nut CW for removal. If it is marked "R" you, naturally, turn it CCW for removal. If the studs are not marked it is CCW for removal. This applies to all wheels regardless of location. |

On my MC9, and I believe all others, all lug nuts on the left/street/drivers side of the coach are LEFT hand threads and all on the right/passenger/curb side are RIGHT, so do as Gus said. So, all 30 nuts on all wheels on the left side of the coach are just the opposite of what you're used to. And then there are bus nuts which are completely screwed on backwards. |

Chuck, If only it were true! Someone previously put L studs on my 4104 on the right and R on the left. This was after installing all new brakes including drums and pots. Needless to say I'm leaving it this way, this is too much work to change. This is the only heavy vehicle I have ever seen this way and I collect big antique trucks and firetrucks. I know that there are a lot of people who don't know which is the right side of a vehicle and which is the left and the guy who did this must be one of them. |

Good Morning Folks: On the way home last night, I thought about my post here and realized that I might have caused some confusion. Michael's friend has an ex NJ Transit MC-9 which were equipped with hub piloted wheels. Therefore they are not right and lefts. There is one stud that is utilized on the fronts and tags both sides and one stud for the drive axle both sides. Wheel nuts have a flange on them to secure the wheel to the hub. For those with stud piloted wheels there are definately lefts and rights. Wheel nuts are tapered and fit into a chamfer in the wheel. You never want to operate a coach with the wrong studs on either side, as in time the nuts will back off and you lose a wheel!!!! Sorry if I confused anyone!!! Happy & SAFE!!! Bussin' to ALL. Luke, I've driven the bus over 5000 mi with no sign of loosening and I'm not about to go to all that work to reverse them. My feeling is that they are rusted and painted on so who can argue with success? I'll reverse them any time I need to do some maintenance and keep a close watch in the meantime. Most autos did away with the L/R thing years ago with no dire consequences that I know of. |

gusc, Isn't is possible that when the auto companies "did away" they made some other changes that alleviated the need for reversed threads? What's been done to alleviate those same concerns with the Bus? Maybe just switching hubs/drums from a wrecking/salvage yard would be easier? |

Marc, I do not think he needs new drums. According to his post someone had them off and replaced them incorrectly. I think he just does not want to go to the trouble to pull them all off and switch sides. Would probably be a lot of work. Richard |
