I'm doing some work on my front brakes in my GM4106. The maximum allowable ID cast into the brake drum is unreadable. Da 4106 Book says Front Brake drub Inside Diameter 14.500" - 14.510" with max out of round .010" NO maximum ID listed except for discussion about "brake drums should never be machined to more than 1/8" (.125") beyond original Diameter." Mine measure 14-11/16" (14.685")so I'm guessing its past time for new drum but would like to know what the maximum allowable. AND... DO BOTH front wheels HAVE TO DO DONE AT EXACT TIME? I'm doing the Right Front first and now because although there is plenty of brake pad left one of the two brake pads on each shoe has cracked moved away from the metal shoe on this Right Front wheel. I'll eventually get to the other front wheel but may not have time before next trip -- it does have plenty of brake pad and no cracks. While in there I'm also checking all pins, S-Cam bushings, seals and considering going back to oil bath front wheel bearings -- which seems to be how it was set up. I'll attempt to search for posts on this but would appreciate any thoughts on all the above -- Thanks Jerry |

Jerry - It's always best to do a brake job on both sides of an axle, that way the braking effort is matched. But sometimes time restraints prevent doing so, just plan on "finishing the job" if you can't do both right now. Luke can give you the proper specs on the brake drum, call him first thing Monday 1-888-262-2434 between 9-5 Eastern. Oil bath bearings are good if you're running 25,000 or more miles per year. If your coach sits more than it runs, like most RVs, then greased bearings are better. Check with Luke to confirm. Good Luck & HTH, RJ PD4106-2784 Fresno CA |

The brake drums are avilable in several quality levels. From rough cast for transits to fully machined balanced units for smooth high speeds. LUKE sells them all, and servicable used. FAST FRED |
