The Neoplan USA plant in Lamar CO is closing. The story can be seen in the following link:

http://www.denverpost.com/business/ci_3220542

The following paragraph is a bit of history of the plant:

The American subsidiary of the German bus manufacturer, Neoplan began operations in 1981 in Lamar, Colorado. Since that time, Neoplan USA has been a major player in the bus market in the US. Neoplan manufactures a wide range of models ranging from 45 foot coaches down to 30 foot transit buses.

It is reported that the plant built between 6K and 7K buses since it opened.

The following are a couple of thoughts I would like to add:

The news is very bad for Lamar, since Neoplan is a very large part of the employment for this relatively small, rather remote, south eastern Colorado town.

Just after the plant opened, Neoplan sent a beautiful highway coach to The Gates Rubber Co. in Denver to transport several members of our “Gates Technical Club” to the plant for an unbelievable tour. At that time they really projected the German theme and had a great stage show of German music for us. As I recall, the plant manager was from Germany. For an engineer who loved anything with wheels, it was like dying and going to heaven. I often think of that great experience.

The plant shutting down is sure a sad event for me.

That is a real bummer, I always wanted to go down there and see that plant. I always hate to hear about people being out of a job.
