The brakes on this MCI 102 DL3 have been getting sticky- starting off from a light you have to hit the pedal a couple of times to release the brakes. Then last week after releasing the parking brake the brakes were stuck on. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Are you aware of the proper sequence for releasing the DD3 brakes on your MCI? If you don't do it right, they don't release fully.

The correct procedure is:

1. Build air pressure to 120 psi (governor cut-out).

2. Rest foot on service brake, but do not apply any pressure.

3. Release parking/emergency brake (push down on knob).

4. AFTER releasing parking brake, make a full service brake application (all the way to the floor) and hold for approximately 3-5 seconds.

5. Release service brake, and you should be good to go.

NOTE: When stopping at a point where you're going to apply the parking brake, hold the coach in place with a very light foot on the service brake (or not at all, if possible) before pulling the parking brake knob. This will make releasing the brake somewhat easier.

Follow the proper procedure above, and you shouldn't have any trouble. If you still have problems, take your coach to a BUS repair facility and have them checked out thoroughly.

Doug, if the bus has been sitting for a long time , it could be that one or all of the brake cams are hanging up. I have had that happen with one of my tankers that doesn't get used much. It could also be a broken brake shoe return spring in one wheel (not too likely). I would try greasing the cams and make multiple brake applications to try and free things up. If that doesn't work, figure out which wheel is hanging up and pull it apart. Just another thought, have you got lots of air pressure when this happens?

A leaking diaphragm or "O" ring in your relay valve could give those symptoms. With pressure up, put your finger over the bleed-off opening on the bottom and feel if any pressure is escaping. You may be able to hear it if the engine has been shut off, or you are using shop air to test with. Don't know where it is? Sorry, but on a DL3 I don't either!!! Look in 'Da Book.

Sticky is sometime worn shoes. When roller near edge of “S” cam limit it will hang up.

Make sure you have good air pressure before releasing brakes as already mentioned.S-Cam rollers could be binding in the shoe (iron),not riding properly on s-cam.Could possibly have flat spots on rollers. If your not familiar with s-cam brake relines,I also recommend to have a pro check it.
Best of luck.

Before you do anything make sure the brake pedal is all the way up reach down and pull it up, Some times they will stick down and you won't even be able to no it except that your brakes act like they are dragging. If your brake lights are on in the rear after you release them this can be your problem. Been there done that. C Fred
