I went to the truck tire company today to replace my 7 year old Firestone tires on front of the Eagle 10 with two new Bridgestones. My plan was to move the older Firestones to the back and wear them out. The Firestones looked O.K. with no obvious cracks. I was surprised to see the tire split wide open about a foot on the sidewall after they had put it on the outer dual wheel when they aired it up. I remember hearing the tire seminar leader in Arcadia saying 6 years was the time for tire replacement. The sidewall was really weak and rotten. My wife and I realize how lucky we were to get rid of those tires before our 1800 mile annual trip down to Bussing 2,006. I learned a good lesson today and I don't even feel as bad about spending $400 each for the Bridgestones.

D.T., I went through the same thing two days ago. Just arrived after a 1200 mile trip, and a knot started growing on the left front. It ended up 18 inches long and the diameter of a large sausage. When the tire guy swung his sledge to break the bead, it went right throught the sidewall!!!! They just turned 7 last summer. Up until the knot appeared there was no indication of trouble, and the sidewall showed only very light deterioration. I keep covers over them, and use Armor All or similar regularly. Yes, I kow some of you guys have 14 years on a set of re-grooved re-caps, but I certainly don't see how.
Cheers...JJ

I am under the impression that using Armor all on tires hastens the removal of the oils from the rubber. It may make them look pretty, but its bad for the tire.

Jim -

There are chemical agents employed in a tire's composition,
that are promulgated upon flexing of the tire, that keep the tire
both flexible and resilient.
(Holy crap, I sound like Marc)

If the tires don't roll, the chemicals don't do their job, and
the tire decays and disintegrates. It's well documented.

It's my opinion, that the guys that spend their cash on "look good"
chemicals, don't use the vehicle in the manner and interval it
was designed to be used. I wouldn't blame the product that
keeps it "looking good".

Or more simply: Use it or lose it?

However those white covers that keep away the UV seem to be a bit of cheap insurance.

The BEST insurance is selling them at 6 years to truckers who will happily run the rubber off quickly.

Works for me,

I go to the dollar store and pick up one step Floor wax, clean my tires real good, put on wax and forget them for 3 months put It on 2 times a year, they will keep looking good and the wax dont hurt the sidewalls. I did It on trucks for 32 years. works for me

Hmmm, this may bear some looking into, since Armor All promotes itself as a rubber protectorant. Not just a "pretty-face " product. When the casing dry rotted through and allowed the air bubble "sausage" to appear, it was the resiliency of the still pliable, outer rubber jacketing, that held the air instead of letting it blow out, or go flat. Like Fred I use vinyl tire covers to stop the UV damage, and I certainly won't try to get an extra year again. The tire shop manager said usually no more than 6 years for safe operation.

Another thing to remember is sometimes you dont really remember! I thought for sure my tires were only 4 years old but looking back thru my log book it seems they are over 6 years old. Time flies when your having fun!

Hey Bluegrass?
re: "one step Floor wax"

Be hard to steer and stop with the thread all waxed up!

Say, didn't someone mention brake fluid as a tire conditioner?
(he had a "fan club", I think)

JJ,

I read quite a while ago that Armorall dries out tires and you may well have proven it. There is something to paint on tires and I wrote it down and now can't find it. It was expensive and supposed to be the same stuff that is in tires originally that migrates when the tire is used.

JohnMC9,

Please make a special effort not to start sounding like Marc.

I try, but it seems to come over me as some sort of illumes
pervasions of the mental parenthetic of the universe!

Bluegrass -

Lighten up man, I've probably tried and broadcast many more
"strange" remedies than you. My reference to Mr Two-Fans
was strictly for the ha-ha's.. Most of his ideas worked fine! Likewise,
most of the "out-of-the-box" thinking here is also of great value!

Don't take life so serious!

gusc, I'm puzzled. What do I "sound like" ? :^) ?

Is this another approach/attempt to impose "thought police?"

I'm a positive thinker but one thing I'll assure you, I don't think I'm "better" than any of the rest of us. I may know something you don't but that works both ways. I've said "Ah-ha!" to more than one of your posts (saying something I didn't know, overlooked or forgotten)!

Simple knowledge doesn't make me any "better" than you or any other lurker or participant to the BBs.

Gee whiz... I am awed in all you guys presence...

I really appreciate all you guys sharing your knowledge. Some folks "speak" more technically than others, but all are appreciated.

Quite seriously gus, if you or someone else can come up with articles I'd like to see them. I'm not trying to argue, I'm just concerned about the future care and feeding of my expensive new tires! (I cringe when I recall that just a couple of days earlier I was whizzing through the mountains of West By God Virginia on I-77) I will switch brands in an instant if shown the light. Sun of A Gun, Tire Magic and many others, really are nothing more than "pretty-face" stuff, but I thought Armor All was the hot setup, and now you guys have disillusioned me! ...JJ

I used to sell tires--Armor All destroys them. If they are more than a few years old, I can tell if they were shined with it. My Shelby Charger had, when purchased, a set of Pirelli P2000's with ~40% tread & noticeable sidewall cracking...only on the outside. I asked the seller, "How often did you Armor-All the tires?" His answer, "Every week or so...how'd you know that?" No vehicle I own will ever have tires Armor-All'd.

As for 5 year age limit? BS. If the tires check out (no sidewall gouges, even wear, no cracking), I'd run them. The 10.00R20 Bandags (Goodyear casings) on the ramp truck at work are about 8 years old (capped at least twice)...they're still in good shape. Of course, the truck is driven at least 3 days a week.

"Of course, the truck is driven at least 3 days a week."

That's the key to this entire topic. These buses are made to
be run, and so are the tires. It can get real expensive keeping
a bus as a caged pet.
