The latest issue of Fleet Owner has an article on the new low sulphur fuel and how each manufacturer is dealing with the 2007 emmission regs. Diamler-Detroit Diesel stated that the Series 60 will be replaced with a new engine after 2009. If this is true, one might want to reconsider or think about a repower to a 60 from a 2 cycle and then have to worry about parts for it down the road also.Yeah, I know, parts should be available for years. Thoughts, anyone? I'll go put my flame retardant suit on now.:-)

I am a member of a antique truck club here in Ohio. We recently held a meeting at the deroit reliabuilt reman facility in Byesville Ohio. A part of the meeting was a tour of the facility and a presentation given to us by Mr. Ray Gibson. ( Controller for the copany) In the presentation he told us that the parts for the present engines being rebuilt ( series 50 and 60 as well as the the two cycle line would be available for the next 15 to 20 years. This due to not only wide on road but also off road use in the US as well as a healthy market over seas. I ask specifically about the 671 in line and the 6v92 and he told me that all of the 71 series as well as the 92 series products had healthy markets and would continue to be supported by Diamler Detroit. On the tour I saw 50 and 60 series engines beeing remaned and one line was set up specifically for the two cycle engines 92 and 71 series.

Not to worry , almost all the parts that wear out and need replacements are made by suppliers for low bucks.

After DD is claiming "unavilable" their suppliers will still be pumping out merchandise.

Maybe a Chinese thermostat direct from the mfg for a DD wont be the $75 DD charges, but only $15 with a healthy markup included.

I think that the extensive use in marine and off-road of 2 cycles will ensure that they will be available as long if not longer than the series 60's

It isn't the parts availability that I'm worried about with the 2 cycles,
it's the increasing pollution standards. If the state or feds up the
criteria, you may not be able to use the bus. There is nothing to stop
a state from regulating the usage by prohibiting the registration, or
by making the registration fee too costly to be practical.
