Hello fellow six and ten wheelers There have been some interesting posts on the Net about using acetone in fuel (for gas engines). The web sites and research page seems faily legit, but I don't know if their claims of improved mileage were realistic, or even possible. They are talking about putting a small amount of acetone, about 4 oz. in a tank of gasoline. -My thought immediately was that this was like the infamous magnets for your fuel line, or that the whole thing was dreamed up by the Acetone Producers of America.) If anyone is interested, I'll try and find the page again. But that leads to a couple more questions. Does anyone know the effects of acetone in a combustion chamber? We used to run methanol/wood alcohol in our 1/4 midgets years ago. We had hopped up 5 horsepower Continentals. And I believe dragsters run methanol, also. I've been throwing cans of Chemtool down the tank of my one ton (345 Int'l V8) as the carb has sat for years. This stuff costs three bucks for 15 oz., and when I checked the label, it contained acetone, methanol, toluene, and I believe Methyl Ketone. Methyl Ketone is a solvent-cleaner (?) and all I know about toluene is that they took it out of paint so the kids would stop sniffing it. So, any of you "veteranos" want to share your experience trying different stuff in your gas tanks, and how much good (or bad) stuff happened? Also accepted for submission are how many different things people have put in the tank of a diesel engine besides diesel, and had it work. So far I've burned motor oil and diluted 90 wt. oil in a pinch, and it seems to run OK. Pat Young OJT training Great San Joaquin Valley |

Pat I did put a neodymium/ferrite Nikken magnet on the fuel line of my wife's Ford Windstar and picked up one mile per gallon. I have one on my GMC Palm Beach, but, because of the difficulity in filling the same each time, I don't know if it helped or not. |

Toluene is a known octane booster. Moth balls also increase octane. Paint thinner works in the mix on a diesel according to the page someone posted yesterday. I don't buy the magnet business. If it actually did anything the auto manufacturers would have done that years ago to meet CAFE standards. Diesels are fairly tolerant of other hydrocarbon fuels within reason when mixed. |

Toluene, xylene benzene were used in WWII to boost the octane of gasoline for our airplanes to 145. They can be safely added to gasoline as an octane booster. The particular one does not matter and it can be an impure mix of cyclic hydrocarbons, the class toluene, xylene and benzene belong to. It is probably not legal today, but they should burn clean and not add to polution from the burning. They are toxic and the unburned vapors from fuelling will definitely add to polution. They may also be hard on some rubber components and seals. Rather than measure octane, you could just drive up an easy grade in high gear and listen for pinging. By trial and error you will find the exact mixture your engine requires. |

Well just remember if you add it on our say so, and it blows, We only try to tell everyone else what has worked for us individually, some of our Ideas have bee tried and proven and some are in therory only, Sometimes therorys are like ASSuming something. Now I dont Intend to make anyone here mad. But Detroit has been selling a system called algea X, for several years, it is a magnetic device tested and proven, so sometimes, even if it dosent make sense, It still may work well. we just dont know all the answers, Remember when the world was FLAT, that was good therory, Testing the water so to speak Proved otherwise. So do you guys think there might really be a SANTA CLAUSE??????Good luck with whatever you try, just PLEASE post the actual results here so we may all learn. the good the bad , and yes even the ugly, see some of you all in arcadia, Bill 340 |

John - I don't know - I only celebrate Festivus now, and there are no gifts or 're-gifting' allowed, only the feats of strength and the airing of grievances (kinda like a certain nameless BBS)- can't wait to meet you and a few others in Arcadia that I have yet to have the pleasure of meeting - Niles |

Nilesie- Yeah, that MAK board can be like that. I travel incognito. If I do attend, you may not recognize my character; I look totally different than the way I type. I used to part my hair, but now, my hair is parting me. "Festivus", yes. The actual origin of the "Santa Clause". |

Bill - Re: "But Detroit has been selling a system called algea X, for several years, it is a magnetic device tested and proven," See: ALGAE-X provides a Total Fuel Management System And their press release looks nice, but it's called "forward looking" in the stock market world, and contains wording that isn't always all that valid to what is actually happening. Doing a search at Detroit Diesel for Algae-X, returns information about using Algae-X products other than any "magnetic influenced" products. They appear to endorse only the filtration system and additives, but make no mention of any "magnetic" influence. I don't mean to be insulting or overly argumentive, but am I missing something? I always had trouble believing a magnet can have any influence on anything that is not metallic. I'd love to be shown otherwise. |

I understand that there is a magnet, around the impeller inside, causing bla bla, I dont know completely, just remember it being explained something to that effect, Didnt say Anyone was wrong, never will. BUT inside Info suggest that NILES will be posing as Santa, as I dont have a chimney on my coach, I hope he dosent mistake the Black water vent, See ya all soon, Bill |

When I had a lawn to mow I used to add an ounce or two of either acetone or naptha. I orignally did it to see if it would help with hard starting. I never did any scientific tests on it but I used to use nearly one tank full of gas to mow the lawn. After adding the solvents it would last longer. I might give it a shot on my car and see what happens. |

Bill - Niles has been found frequently using that vent as some sort of "bong"; sniffing and inhaling the vapors. Oh, he denies inhaling (his attempt to be Presidential material), but the rumors are plentiful to the contrary. When we add to that, the attitude and demeanor of someone that's been stealing sniffs at the black water tank vent, the ugly picture becomes more believable. Niles, I'm afraid, is a black water junkie; a "sewer-head". It's sad, but true. Love will go a long way, Bill. Let's show him we care. It -is- Christmas time, after all. |

Unless you have s source to steal the afore-mentioned chemicals from, I don't see how it is economically viable to use them. ...JJ |

I find the idea of using acetone added into gasoline and diesel engines very interesting. I use it everyday on the job as a thinner. I have used for many years Sea Foam a chemical additive for gas & oil with GREAT succes in small to large engines. I have burnt it in a cup. Burns clean like Sterno until the solvent is consumed. What's left is half liteweight oil. I do not know what solvent is used but suspect it is or like acetone. fwiw, Joe |
