The other day I noticed the gen lite blink on for a split second an hour later it did it again. The first time I thought it to be a reflection off of something 300 hundred miles later it flashes for a longer period of time, untill I put it in nuetral with the brake (parking brake)The lite no longer flashes. I am now at a campground in Charleston, S.C. It is charging while in park ? I plan on driving it back to central Florida where I can take to my favorite Bus shop. Any Ideas. Thanks

Hello taffyman.

You are on the verge of generator failure.

They don't give you much warning. Those flashes will very shortly become a constant on, and no gen condition.

You really want to be close to your usual friendly repair folks. This is a "dead in the water" repair and will be priced accordingly!

If you have another way to charge your batteries, using your other generator, then off you go for home with the gen running to power the coach.

I have changed mine once. (MC8, 8v71, same as a '9 except mine is belt drive and air cooled) So, I can say I did it, once. Next time I'll pay someone. They are awkward and heavy. very little space for a mechanical assistant, most give up and do it by hand, air cleaner has to be torn out... I have many other things that I will enjoy hurting myself doing besides another one of those Delcos!

Good luck with yours, and please let us know what it turns out to be!

happy coaching!

My 'Not Gen.' bug light comes on for a second sometimes too. Usually seems to be when the batteries are fully charged and I am at idle. It has done that ever since I bought the bus. I heard this can be normal for a bus system with far less loads on it than it used to have, i.e. interior lighting, AC blowers etc. I hope mine is not on the verge of going out. The previous owner had it go out on him, and had it rewound at a motor shop. Sure does look like one heavy monster to have to remove . . . Mine leaks oil so someday, I'd like to replace the gasket. But I don't want to have to do it in an emergency repair. It's direct drive unit.

I just had my Gen rebuilt and the light comes on
for a short time when I turn on some lights or
other draws it will not come on. I call the guy
at the bus garage, he is the one who rebuilt it.
he told me to set the volt reg. up a tab, They have many buses and he said this is not uncommon.

The former owner of my Prevost Champion with 8V71 replaced the original bus generator with a much smaller 24V truck alternator. My 24V system powers only the starter and the exterior lights. He said, including the custom mount bracket, etc. the smaller alternator cost him a fraction of what a replacement bus generator would have cost. I think it's belted off the old A/C compressor pulley. It's been doing a fine job for me for over 30,000 miles and a couple of years now. Should this one fail, it will be a snap to replace.
