Hello, I have a 78 GMC RTS II Series 01 with a Detroit 8v71N. Yesterday, after a short trip, when I was going to make the final leg home, when I started it, the Low Oil light didn't go out. I checked the oil and added some to it. Still stayed on. I really don't know but I think this light covers oil pressure too.

Could this be a result of a clogged oil filter?? What else could cause this? (Besides oil pump going bad or something.) Can you guys give me an idea of where else to look? Thanks so much!

Are you showing oil pressure at the manual oil pressure gauge at the rear area of the engine? If so, it is probably just the sending unit gone bad, test it by disconnecting the wire going to it at the same oil manifold where the manual oil pressure gauge is located.

I don't know about yours... but I had a similar experience... Pressure on the gauge was fine, but the DDEC was receiving oil pressure low and issued a stop event... Turned out the connector on the oil pressure switch going to the DDEC was corroded... A quick cleaning and reconnection and everything worked fine again...

Good luck.

Geoff, is that the gauge by the Rear Start? ( I started it today just for the heck of it & no light.) I had seen this gauge before, but I had no idea that's what it was. I really need to order some books or something. I sure wish I could figure out where I'm blowing oil from. The fan blows it all over everything. I figure it's eiter a valve cover or the blower or something. I'd rather it be a valve cover I think.

In any case, I REALLY appreciate everyone's help here, I have learned a lot in a short time!

It shows about 22 psi @ idle. Is that good or bad?

Hello RS

Oil pressure sounds good to me!

To find that leak, try pressure washing the engine, and then run it, stopping to check frequently, so you find the source before it gets sprayed all over everything.

For the heck of it, you can check the various fasteners and hold downs to see if there are any that will take up some slack.

Go easy on the valve cover fasteners. Don't be using the pipe extension, if you know what I mean!

happy coaching!

Of the three serious oil leaks I've had with vehicles, two were oil senders switches and one was caused by running over a large rock/small boulder in my '57 Chevy - knocked the oil filter canister askew! I know it aint your oil filter and hope its simply a switch!

Pressure washing is good and there's a dye technique I've never experienced but is used by garages. They steam the engine after locating the leak, BTW.
