In my quest to upgrade my "points of interest" on the Garmin,
I stumbled into this web site:
http://www.discoveryowners.com/cginfolinks.htm

Free downloads for your "Tom Tom" GPS (and others), and
Mapping program upgrades!

Thanks, that is great stuff John, not sure just how to use it though. Can I just add that to my new DeLorme program for instance or what? Help us that are "computer challenged" a bit if you know how.

Don-

I'm not sure how DeLorme uses a file, but with my Garmin,
a "point of Interest" file is uploaded using a POI uploader
program, and all poi files have to be uploaded at the same
time.. I haven't tried it yet.

I'm trying to get the MS Maps to accept the files, using it's
built-in data import tool, and not having a world of luck with
the "low clearance" files. The Walmart one uploaded OK to
MS Streets, but apparently was not built properly, and does
not locate the Walmart stores in that file..

Mileage will vary, and it's best to read your map/unit instructions
for uploading data, prior to attempting it (something I rarely do
and live to regret). With the files provided at that site, do not
attempt using them if you have any doubts about it!

(I'm retired and have plenty of time to go look for a laptop
that's been thrown across the lawn and into the pucker brush)

I have successfully damaged the data file in MS Streets, for
many previous Walmart locations! The new file has apparently
written over the existing file and deleted some entries.

So again, please beware of the updates at that website. They
may or may not work according to plan.

Any doubts? DO NOT DO IT.

(now where'd I throw that *&%$$^%# laptop?)

Ok....

For MS Streets, and using it's data uploader, you have to
instruct it to use the first column as "latitude", the second
as "longitude" and the third as "name". All the Walmarts,
low bridges, etc will show up on the US map as push-pins.

You can then "save" the map (name it whatever you want)
and the next time you need to find where a low bridge is,
just open your saved map!
(It'll be the *.est ones, I have "low bridges.est")

Neat!

Hmmmm. . . When in doubt, read the directions, eh?

Me too John. I figure that if you must read the friggin instructions, it should be banned and labeled "User unfriendly". That is why I asked you rather than read the instructions.

The TomTom file is outdated. Users should use www.tomtom.com or email their support person for any updated files.
