It appears the 110 electric fan that was supplied with my generator has gone further south or stayed there after retrieving bus. Anyway, it quit working. I removed it today and wired it directly to the house via extension cord and it runs ok until it seemingly gets hot and quits. same thing must be happening in the bus because it causes the diesel generator to cut off. The other incoming squirrel cage fan I installed is moving air IN and OVER generator but not enough to cool radiator, hence the overheating. I checked with Wrico since that is where it came from and looks like a direct replacement will cost upwards of 400 bucks. Now I know this isn't the only electric motored 18 inch fan that is availlable and used for these diesel generators because this particular one came from Holland. Probably why the price is so high! Anyway, now that the holes are cut and the radiator mounted, is there any other alternative that might be a little cheaper priced or do I have to bite the bullet and spend another 400 bucks. Not good after the 700 I just spent on air system but if I have too I will. Hoping there is something else that is a little more readily availlable!

Thanks as always...
Ace

Ace, there are still some electric motor repair shops in larger cities that may be able to repair your existing fan. I know I had one when I was in the LA area and I suspect there may be one in the Tampa or Orlando area. Probably would be a bunch cheaper. From the sounds of it, it may only need bearings or lubrication.

Ace: If the fan you need is just a high volume radiator fan, ask Two Dogs for one of the ones I sent to him and he didn't use.

Ace,
Check with Tampa Armature. They may be able to rebuild/repair the motor. Jack

Don't know what commitments you made to position and arrangement, but have you considered the 120/240 V squirrel cage from a home Forced Air Furnace? I've robbed these out of used, replaced FAUs and they've served well in various tasks for years.

Best of all, they're free! Local mechanical contractor is my source!

Grainger Supply has just about every known replacement part,
tool or otherwise... just give them the numbers from the tag
on the motor.

Ok had a chance to look into the motor on the fan since I couldn't find a shop to do it and what I found was a round cylindrical looking thing that resembles a large resistor. The aluminum it is made from is actually cracked and my suspiscion is from heat...duh! Anyway, the writing on it is foriegn (with all due respect to foriegners) and I can't understand any part of it! I took a couple of pictures of it to give you an idea as to what it may be. If anyone knows or has a clue as to where I can get one, I would appreciate it. It appears to be a very easy fix IF I had this piece. It would sure beat spending 400 bucks for a NEW replacement from Wrico! No I have not checked with him on this part but I bet he says I need to replace the whole fan!

Thanks
Ace... without a COOL generator for now!

Ok did some research and found the exact same name and model number fan at Grainger. It's a Multifan model number 4E45 and the cost is uh... $487.25

See why I would like very much to find the part for it! i DID find a company that handles these fans and I will call them tomorrow. Hopefully they can lead in the right direction for THE PART and NOT the fan!

Ace,

Take the "cracked" cylinder to an Appliance Parts store or a HVAC contractor. They will be able to test what I believe is a capacitor that's gone bad. I had this happen awhile back, new capacitor and the motor ran fine again.

Ace, almost certainly a capacitor (condensor) probably for starting. I suppect it is in the 20 Microfarad range but if the item was turned a little more I could read the actual capacitance. Should be absolutely no problem to find a replacement. Very probably is an electrolytic type. Should be in the Graingers catalog.

ACE

if only 2 terminals - most likely it's a "run" capacitor - this could explain heating problem

granger 6X669 - oval not round

1 15/16 Depth by 2 15/16 width by 2 7/8 height

good to 440 voltsa/c
