I want to add an aux air compressor and wanted to know what most people are doing and what size they are using. I have a 4 gallon pancake from sears, seems it would make just as much noise as running the engine early in the morning at a campsite. I am looking at two portables one is made by Oasis hp1000 and the other is the Extreme Aire. Does anyone have any experenice with these. |

I have had an aux compressor on two coaches. The current one is installed within an insulated enclosure and the sound level is muffled. The first sounded like rocks bouncing around in a cement mixer, and the current one is muted such that it can be heard, but only barely. I think the sound deadening materials include acoustic foam, plywood and possibly a layer of lead foil. |

I have an air compressor just like the one on the bus engine (671) mounted on the generator engine |

The pancake compressors are usually loud due to the open crankcase design of the oil-less compressor head. I plan on using a belt driven compressor head (cast iron) & motor off of an old air compressor that had a hole in the tank (the result of the former owner not draining the water after use). I'll connect it to the wet tank with a check valve and an isolation valve. I'll also include an unloader valve between the compressor & check valve. good luck, kyle4501 |

Can a conventional air conditioner or fridge compressor be modified and used? |

A fridge compressor might work , but it would be really slow , and you might have to figgure a way to re oil it often. Not all the homeowner jobs are very noisy , I have a small Sears that will run 100lb pressure and easily (and quietly ) airs up the coach. FAST FRED |

John, we are using a 1/2 hp DeVilbiss that takes about 10 minutes to air the coach and works well on the inverter. Not bad for noise. The tank needs to be ditched. Ours was tankless. For what it's worth. Tom Caffrey PD4106-2576 Suncatcher Ketchikan, Alaska |

Amazon.com's tool dept sells a mini compressor that comes with a finish nailer. It's very quiet. |
