How can you adjust the fast idle on a 6v92? Mine is set at 1950 rpms. I would like to set it about 1100 rpms.

If it is DDEC, any shop with a reader can reset it in a few minutes. If it is mechanical, the spring inside the fast idle cylinder controls the speed. Replace it with a softer spring. You can do this by trial and error, however, the real springs are color coded for speed. From the sound of it, someone has incorrectly screwed in the fast idle cylinder to raise it. The internal cylinder may be sticking also. There is a cylinder inside the cylinder. It may just need unscrewing to the right position. Check the manual-lots of info there.

Is all this in the valves near the throttle linkages just outside the blower box? Yes, mine is mechanical.

It is threaded into the governor box at the "front" of the engine where the throttle linkage is mounted. It is on the left side near the front and frequently has a cable clip to stabilize it. An air hose is connected to the end of it. Pull it and clean it and follow the manual to adjust it. You really need "Da Book" if you're going to do the work yourself. It probably will cost less than the manual to have this done at a shop this one time, but there will be more things to do in the future.

On some models there is an air cylinder that is on the throttle linkage, if not adjusted correctly can make fast idle high. Try this, start engine put fast idle on and go to engine compartment try to move throttle linkage by hand and see if you can slow engine down, if you can all you have to do is adjust air cylinder. Ive worked on hundreds of these engines and have never seen the wrong spring in the fast idle adjustment. If the above does'nt solve your problem then look on the left side of the governor there is a round cyl with a air line on it, all you have to do is loosen the 9/16 lock nut and screw hole cylinder out to drop rpms. You dont have to take the air line off to do this.

Don't wear loose clothing while doing it with the engine running,
either. You'll have your arms between the moving fan belt. UGH.

I had inadvertently turned that air control in all the way in,
not knowing better. It was loose because the locknut was
never tightened by the previous owner. I started the engine
and it went full bore instantly! It would not shut down. I had
to reach between that belt to unscrew that idle cylinder to
reduce the rpm and get it shut down.. It is not something you
want to do a second time. Well, not until your pants are
emptied and washed...

Yeah... watch out for those moving parts!!

My first and last fairly major injury was on my first bus- engine idling, I stuck my hand VERY carefully on to the REAR of the alternator to see if it was warm (trying to figure out if it was working)

To this day, I will NEVER understand how my thumb found the alternator blower blades (on the ~front~ of the thing)... I heard a buzz, saw the engine compartment turn red, THEN looked at what was left of my thumb... gone all the way past the nail.... OUCH

Amazingly, the doctor said it would probably grow back, and it did ! Still can't button my shirt though....

BE CAREFUL

See, if y'all had a GM bus you wouldn't have to worry about those pesky belts OR alternator fan blades!
