I wish to tow my 1977 CJ Jeep all four wheels down. It is automatic with a Dana 20 transfer case, does anyone actually know if this transfer case can be flat towed without dropping the driveline? I know the auto is ok as long as I leave it in Park, but have heard so many different stories on whether this Dana 20 is able to do this or not. Thanks.
Peter.

Peter,

We also tow a CJ7 Auto/Dana20.. I just put the transfer in neutral.. Jeep has been towed in this manner for about 10k miles with no problems.. although I do put the auto tranny in neutral also..the reason is, without the shifter in park, you cannot lock the steering wheel..

Hook it up and drag it down the road.. CJ's make a great toad!!

Thanks Doug,
I can leave mine in Park as it is an aftermarket swap with a floor shifter. I was told by one guy who had his Jeep for sale, that he was told to leave ONE front hub locked in as it would slowly turn the front driveshaft with drag rather than both locked, which would turn it at road speed. This in turn would slowly take lube to the output shaft bearing via the gears in the transfer case.
I suppose it is another thought, whether it works or not is difficult to say. If you have been ok in 10K miles either way seems good to me. Thanks.
Peter.

Is anyone of you pulling a Jeep Grand Cherokee on all four? I have been told by a person that owns one of these animals that all you have to do is place the quadratrac transfer case into neutral and unlock the wheel and pull away. True??

Greg,
The Quadratrac unit cannot be towed on all four unless it has had one of the "overdrive" or "part-time" modifications by MileMarker carried out, then I was told, it can be flat towed if freewheeling front hubs are also installed. Try this website for some info:
http://www.off-road.com/jeep/tech/xfer/qtrac.html
Has yours got locking front hubs? If so, it may well have had the modification, but you will have to check further.
I read of one guy who engaged the "emergency drive" and installed locking hubs, ran them unlocked and drove around in two wheel drive all the time. I would be very dubious of doing that without knowing exactly what effect it was having upon the internals. Hope this helps.

Greg,
thinking more into this.......
How old is the vehicle? If it is one of the newer smaller Grand Cherokees, you may find that this is a newer version of the Q-trac. All info should be in the Owners manual for the later style Grand Cherokee, it was in my regular Cherokee of 1987 vintage, telling me exactly how to flat tow it, but I did not have the Q-trac in that vehicle.
My previous post was including Jeeps with Q-trac and the full sized Grand Cherokees.

Peter, I owned a 1993 Grand Cherokee in the past but never attempted nor had a reason to pull 4 down at the time. I am in the market for a new toad and am in the research stage because I want to buy a 4X4 that does not require modification to pull 4 down. Thanks for your help. - Greg

Greg,
that simplifies things. Basically we found that none of the Ford Explorer series would tow and the larger models needed to be reprogrammed. We bought a Dodge dakota 4x4 and it tows real easy with the turn of a switch on the dash. As far as I am aware all the Jeeps will also tow without any problem. Check the Owners Manual, but look carefully as the Dakota does not list the info in the index, only disabled towing is listed. When I read the book thoroughly I found it under a different section. The Dakota is a four door crew cab and it is wonderful, just ask my wife. Hope this helps.

From 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4X4 Quadra-trac Owner's Manual...

"Use the following procedure to prepare your vehicle for towing:

CAUTION! It is necessary to follow these steps to be certain that the transfer case is fully in N (Neutral) before recreational towing to prevent damage to internal parts.

1. Shift transmission into N (Neutral).

2. Shift transfer case lever into N (Neutral). All 4WD indicator lights and tires in the vehicle outline will turn off.

3. Shift manual transmission into gear or automatic transmission into D (Drive) and make sure there is no vehicle movement.

4. Turn ignition key to the unlooked OFF position to prevent steering column from locking.

5. Shift automatic transmission into P (Park).

WARNING! With the transfer case in N (Neutral) position, the vehicle could roll unexpectedly. The parking brake should always be applied when the driver is not in the vehicle.

6. Attach vehicle to the tow vehicle with tow bar.

CAUTION! Do not use a bumper mounted clamp-on tow bar on your vehicle. The bumper face bar will be damaged.

CAUTION! Do not disconnect rear prop shaft because fluid will leak from the transfer case and damage internal parts."

By the way...if you want a good place to possibly pick up a vehicle for towing, you might try an auto auction. We go to one in North Georgia that is open to the public. We've bought 3 vehicles there so far (got my jeep there about 2 months back for $6500--it's a '95 Orvis Edition and in great shape). The only catch is you've got to take cash with you. Some auctions are only open to dealers, but if you are good friends with a dealer maybe you can go with him. If you are looking for something very specific (like a Saturn) it will take a few weeks of going.

Thanks Lorna! I appreciate you taking the time to look and pass along the information to me. I really like the V8 grand Cherokee and I am looking for one that is a 1995 or 1996 just as you have described. I have been watching Ebay for a few weeks and there have been a few that went in the upper $6000 range for the 1995s. Georgia is so far for me from South Texas or I would take your advice. Thanks for your help. - Greg

Hi Scott,

I have tried to move your ad for the sale of your Jeep to the proper category - The WoBN's Flea Market - and I've done something wrong both times. Sorry about that.

I think I had to create a subtopic before moving it, but haven't got that right either. Rather than mess with it anymore, can I get you to list your Jeep in the WoBN section this time, not here please. Thanks!

Sorry for any inconvenience, friend.

Hi Ian,

Oh, sure. Sorry I wasn't thinking about the location when I posted it, since I view all the messages by date posted rather than subject heading. (I have the 'Last Day' discussion page set as my home page in an attempt to never miss a beat!) In fact, I hadn't even intended to post an ad at all until I saw the Jeep discussion going on and thought it might be relevent.

I'll make a new post over in the proper section.

Warm Regards,
Scott
