In order to see images "correctly", you will need to be able to reverse the image from the camera to the receiver. I understand that black and white cameras, while cheap, may not be able to show you smoke. Several of my friends are setting up 3 or 4 cameras. One pointing down to the hitch, one to the towed, and one on each side of the coach. This means that you must have the ability to receive as many inputs or be able to switch the inputs at the receiver. Wireless units don't seem to work very well. Hard wire seems to work the best. |

Walmart had two wireless camera systems for well under $100. Our local store had one system for under $40 (on sale, usually under $70): Q-See 2.4G Wireless CCTV, QSWCRC The systems come complete with receiver... |

On one of the more popular web-auction sites there are cameras that have the reversion built into them and a lot of monitors with reversion capabilities. The viewing angle of the camera is of importance as some of them are only 30-35 deg and might be too narrow and some of them are 120 deg. and might be a little too wide. Check the lux capability also as the lower the lux rating the better it works in the dark. I have one that is 0 lux, it works in the dark, but is black and white. Yesterday I saw a color camera with 0 lux capabilities on the auction. I have 3 black and white cameras and will probably end up buying color cameras. Ed |

I've purchased a few cameras from SuperCircuits, and a few "self reversing" cameras from ebay and related sites. I've ALWAYS been pleased with the image quality from anything I've ever purchased from Supercircuits, and I've ALWAYS been displeased with the image quality of the self-reversing ebay and Hong Kong cameras. That's not to say that good ones aren't out there, but side-by-side I've found that Supercircuits can be trusted to deliver high quality cameras while others are...um...FUZZY at best.... Supercircuits stuff is definitely more expensive. BUT in addition to backing up, I use their camera as my rear view mirror, hooked to a 17" LCD monitor. It's quality is a safety thing for me, as well as seeing what I'm hitting or not while backing up. Well worth the extra money not to go "Cheap" on this aspect of your bus.... all you have to do is crunch the back of your bus while backing up just once due to a crappy camera, and you've more than paid for a good one... |

Gary, Thanks for the input. I wondered about the quality of the auction items. The return procedure and expense is sometimes excessive. I really would like to see the picture quality before I purchase so the return privilege is important. Ed |

I bought a 6" LCD color system from RV Cams at: http://www.rvcams.com It works fine and was not very costly. Under $400 for everything. Don't know how it compares to the Ebay systems. It is correctly "reversed" and makes backing into the barn much easier...get really tight backing with a monitor..and it doesn't yell or make expletive signs like my wife. Guy at RV Cams seemed knowledgeable. Had a good return program, although I didn't have to test it. Considering the wide variation of pricing, there must be something that my cheapo system doesn't offer or do. LCD screens will wash out in bright sunlight. I can't see the dash in bright sunlight anyway. May I recommend buying a camera and monitor as a package...had another experience with another company that just didn't work out. JR |

Hi Kyle One thing you may want to consider is a used system. I was at Colaw RV Salvage in Carthage MO just last week. He had several used units he pulled out of existing RVs. The only thing in most that he would need to order for you is a cable, depending on length of bus. The guys name is James, 1-417-548-2125. I have bought a ton (so far about $15,000 worth) of stuff from him for my conversion and anything that he sold and didn't work was either exchanged or refunded, no questions asked. Other than this I have no relationship with him, in case you wonder. Good luck Rob 91 LeMirage Missouri |
