Would anybody have a setup procedure for the buffer switch in the governor for an 8V92?

Do you have Jake Brakes? The procedure for adjusting the Buffer switch that is used in conjunction with the Jake's is included in the Jake manual. I do not recall a Buffer switch used in the governor. Probably could find it with a Google search.

Yes, there's a jake and it is what prompts all this. The jake manual refers you to the OEM procedure for the setup and adjustment of the buffer switch.

two yrs ago I paid a mechanic to play with the fast idle as it did not work dependably. Recently, I have been very suspicious that the jakes were not working properly.

My last trip (recently) I bypassed the buffer switch and determined that the jake is functional.

In the near term I will examine the micro switch on the buffer and attempt to determine if it is working properly as the throttle goes off curb idle. This switch should only close when at idle thus activate the jake.

The above website for fire trucks has much of the setup info for GM's DD's and the governor information as well. I am currently researching this information now.

From about 15 years ago I remember vaguely that the buffer was adjusted to increase the rpm approximately 25 rpm. This is a very critical adjustment and it took me several tries to get it right. Nice to have a good voltmeter and a tachometer. Otherwise I really do not know how you could do it.

That is a great link-- I would say that is the whole Detroit Service manual! To adjust the jake micro switch, adjust the buffer as stated in the book, then shut the engine off. Loosen the micro switch and push it back and forth towards the governor housing. You will hear it click, what you want is to push it in so it clicks, then back it off just far enough to open the push button (unclicking it). Now hold it steady and tighten the hold down screws. That is all there is to the adjustment.

To all:

I'll grant Geoff about the other website & its value to us (nuts) that do our own maintenance.

But, the best site is this one (Ian's) and those of you that make it up.

Kudos.

I could not just move the buffer switch back and forth. Had to loosen one jamb nut and tighten the other. Even after doing that, you need to actually check to see how much tension is being put on the governor.
