Looking to purchase sattelite system for coach. Prefer in-motion but not necessary. Haven't kept up on what's out there for a decent price so what's out there? Who has the best deal? I might be able to install it myself!
It needs to be a low profile dome due to clearance limits above!

Thanks

The latest Camping World catalog shows an "Ultra Low Profile Satellite System" for $2,335.50 (join their Presidents Club for $20 or so for that price) or $2,595 regular price. Height is 5 1/2 inches according to the catalog. It's an in-motion dish. I took a quick look online at their web site, try this link:
http://www.campingworld.com/search/index.cfm?action=search&tcode=11&keywords=%2327007&x=18 &y=11

If that doesn't work just go to their main web site and in the "search" box type: #27007
and that should get you there.

I have no personal knowledge about this product, I only responded because I had just recently seen it in the catalog. Happy shopping -- say Hi to Susan for me.

I bought a refurbished 9702 from Pete at... http://www.kingdom2.com/index.html
for $800 shipped 3 years ago, and have been very happy with it's performance under all conditions, all over the US.
Mine is 15 inches high, which puts it at about the same height as my Coleman Mach 1 roof ACs.
There are also 12 inch high models of King Dome satellite products, denoted by the "LP" in the model number.
They are quite easy to install, and I often watch DTV while fueling. (If the canopy is in the right spot)

I have a KVH that is an in-motion that was just removed from my coach. It needs a receiver (about $80) and for some reason it has a problem that prevents it from communicating with the receiver in terms of its direction and signal strength.

If you monitor signal strength during the seek phase and shut off power to the dish when the signal is strong it will work just fine.

We went with TracStar because it was so highly recommended by so many people whose opinion I respect.

My KVH is free to a good home.

I got the KingDome semi-automatic (pain in the butt) for mine for under $700 off eBay, Its a refurb from kingdome2.com ( out the factory door )

It's 15 inches tall but I have duotherm brick-air a/c units and its about the same heigth.

Notice I said " Brick-air " they are obnoxious and noisey but work.

I do not have one yet, but I have been also researching.

The flat, low model will not shed water unless moving. This will destroy a satellite signal. Also, continual, frequent coatings of Rain-X may be necessary to receive good service.

Guess I'm the only poor boy on the block. I can only afford the old crankup Wineguard...Which works well. Aiming isn't a big deal as long as you know the zip code of somewhere nearby. My local dish network dealer also tells me that the Wineguard will accept the dish dual LNB so you don't have to re-aim to switch between programming on 110 and 119.

Don't overlook the 18" automatic from Moto-sat. Not in motion but will still get a picture when it rains. Also they now have an automatic skewing unit that handle multiple satilites without reaiming the dish. Great for Dish or Direct if you are going to go to HDTV. The domes only work on one sat at a time. We have the older 18" but it will change satilites quickly.

Thanks for all the replies! I checked out King Dome and I like thiers. Don't necessarily like the idea of not dealing with a real person since the re-furbised units are on-line sales only but the price seems fair.

Fred your price sounds really good too but if I can get an in-motion first I will go that route!

Ok after looking over the King Dome site they offer two domes, one in white and one in black. Is there a difference as to service or is it just a color preference? Do they need to stay white or can it be painted to match the coach. If not, then I'm opting for the black to kind of match the dark tinted windows as I think the white would stand out too much!

Pat,

I was advised by Liberty, two of their techs specifically and then verified this by talking to two dealers that sold both KVH and TracStar that the single wire TracStar is extremely reliable and does not require any particular receiver.

The KVH that I removed did a great job, but it needed a receiver that would communicate with it. That appeared to be its weak point.

The TrackStar is what a Nashville dealer installs on entertainer coaches exclusively because they want the reliability they get from the TracStar.

Wasn't there a flat panel Satilite dish that mounted to the roof?

Perhaps I read about it on the GMC MotorHome pages but it was supposed to really be something.

At the time, the price was high but I think I looked it up later and the price was dropping.

Anyone recall this unit and what it costs now??

The best selling point was it had no moving parts and could be used on the fly.

Ace, you will have a lot of places in the country where you cannot get internet coverage except by satelite. You might want to consider combining them. There is a side arm for the Direcway dish that holds the satelite TV LNB. They are not in motion.

Sent an e-mail to Kingdome and they immediately returned a response with a personal phone call from a very nice lady named Sarah. She said Pete no longer does the refurbished units but King Controls does and she was the one to handle any of the re-furbished deals. She was highly knowledgeable on the product/s and didn't show any sign of being in a hurry to get off the phone. She said that most all of the refurbished systems are actuall dealer returns and thoroughly checked and tested at the factory just as a new system is. For the most part she said, they are a new system. You can order on-line or on the phone. All refurbished orders go thru her She also said that buying a refurbished unit over a new unit is savings of upward of a 1000 bucks and the downside is the new units come with a 2 year warranty compared to 90 days. What's better, spending the money up front for new for a 2 year warranty or saving the money now and possibly spend it later for a fix? I say save the money now! LOL
They also have a spray that can be applied to the dome for rain fade but she said that on the black domes, it makes them dull but, I could tape off the sides and just spray the top portion. It has seemed to work so far for other customers. The black dome is kind of new and as said, they can be painted but without a metallic paint. They also can not be sanded or scratched for adhesion. Installation is very easy with just one hole and sealant thru the roof for the coax and mounting holes and sealant for the unit itself. Also they are no longer making the single lnb, only the double!

Looks like I will order one real soon at $1695.00 :-(

Yea I looked it up on google and it said it was due to people not installing them or programming them correctly and the dealers they bought them from got the complaints that they would not work and then they were replacing them to make the customer happy and so the dealers would simply return the original unit for credit. Google also said that these units were for the most part brand new and un-used!

Can't believe you missed that part!

John I really doubt it very much when you say you can do others things besides! All I ever see from you is comical comments and google quotes! Nothing seen here yet from you that is actually first hand! On the other board they are talking about this same exact thing. A lot of quotes from different sources and not much of hands on facts! People converting thier own coach would gather more knowledge from those that have been there and done it compared to those that look it up and read it, then quote it! How about adding what YOU have done personally for a change?

Truth hunter, I guess you would need to call the factory yourself to get the facts. They surely wouldn't be in business if they weren't at least offering a good deal here and there!
And thanks for the "MR" but it's truly not needed as there are other Prevo owners out here as well!

Thanks for the "ekto gamma" PrevoH3-40, I welcome the informality permission, it is so much more conductive to free information (yes at times disinformation and opinion versus repeatable facts)flowing. You may be onto something there with the use of """""""" (quotes)as these things can represent a subliminal symbol of qualifications in print. Not sure what we could use to indicate first hand experience $ $ maybe??? That way we do not have to get so bogged down in filtering the quality of the information we garner here.
I must admit that I kind of give up on talking to factory reps (salepeople) over the phone when they are not directly involved in the repair process; as F.F. aptly and elegantly points out "on this side of the ocean the suits and ties spend the majority of there thinking on how to appeal/manipulate customer's minds rather than on the real product quality/facts to help the consumer decide what works best for there needs" (not a exact quote, by my take on his real experience & wisdom $such is the ineffectiveness of competitive behavior and intent$ . That stated about this particular factory & product with reference back to the validity of MC9J's polite and non slanderous "good" question (included in my with your reply) about "why so many returns" $unfortunaltly, we mechanics all think in these terms of analytical thought and pattern recognition, so try to forgive such a propensity towards our style of fact finding, we don't do it with the hopes of harvesting animosity or other constructs of ego motivated response$ (as best as I can believe); should find the werewith to create the empathy within you; I "believe" your coach would .
I must further ad to the question on topic $what is the return rate on this product and the average life before service is required$!
So perhaps if you are in personal contact (the phone line lies) with one of the techs, perhaps you will chose to ask for us and share your $hard facts$ so we can become better educated and share the experience with others on this board in reciprocity???
I will also try to keep your constructive suggestion in my mind, in spite of my impressions about the customer service reps; when I get down to the 11 hour in the acquisition process on the orbiting transmitter/receiver/relay uplink interface dohickie-equipment. Till then I pleadge to contiune efficiently confining research efforts apon the charity placed on the BNO in what ever form is given. Though it is not my pledge to just believe what ever is said, and I would think that any challenge to what is place within this sacred public trust of data should welcome challenge as that is the only way I can imagine to refine the truth and accuracy of information gathering processes.
I for one take only positive feelings away from my time in front of this stressful data interface and welcome any breaks via tasteful jocularity and only wish I could share the spirit of everyone's good intent with you to enable what I suspect is the true intent of this board, a site of free unobligated data exchange. Free of cost or petty burdens that so often inhibit more formal places of education such as university {$has anyone ever been order to raise there hand before asking the prof a question and then was kick out of school for complying to this unique demand that was exclusively for you and not everyone else for "disruption of the learning enviorment programing"$} haha- true story- hope that helps you finish consuming my well intended (pratle)& somewhat less than conventional, be it emancipated attempts at communication exchange. If not does as Sir Ian sugest and use that blue bar as a effective outlet for sensoring the unwrothy words of this "village idoit"!

((( Crane, KVH has what they call a Phased Array Satellite system, they made it for SUV's it is very low profile ))))

I have seen this unit. It is being used on the GMC motorhomes, a guy at a place in Florida called the the GMC COOP installs them.

http://www.gmccoop.com/

Yes it is the old GMC (1973 - 1978 model years) but they are still around and the owners are almost like in a CULT about them.. They tear then down and restore them, go ahead and sample the site, its interesting if none else.

anyway, the coop installs this unit and says it is very good. Jim Bounds would be most happy to talk to you about it.

I have seen, but don't recall where, another unit, it is flat and has thousands of lnb's in the surface. No movable parts and very low profile and works on the move. No tilting needed. Still looking for it but it is around.

Just thought I'd mention this

Update on the King Dome satellite dish I ordered.

http://www.kingdom2.com/index.html

Finally got thru to the people that sell these via phone due to a faulty web site ordering line and it ships out today via UPS. Woman says, it's just like brand new and should arrive here by Tuesday. I was leaning towards a black dome but opted for the white. She said a lot of testing was done on the black dome out in the dessert with no problems but it's still new and I didn't want to take any chances. I also opted for the Automatic stationary model over the IN Motion model. After considering the fact that there just two of us and we never watch TV while travelling, have no kids, etc., it just wasn't needed. If we want storm weather updates, the dish probably wouldn't work due to rain fade or similar problem and I'd probably just pull over and wait it out or look for another route to go around the bad weather anyway. Just couldn't justify the extra grand for In Motion at this time. The automatic stationary model finds the satellite from a single push of a button where as the other regular stationary model you need to program in the zip code your in for it to lock in. Heck I hardly know what zip code I'm in where I live!

Total bill was $840.00 delivered. Not a bad deal, IMHO...

I will update with the installation of this unist as it is done!
