Recently, message authors are using non-specific "Subject" line titles. This is the line that shows directly on the entry page to a Topic. Examples of this are, "A few questions", "Stupid question guys", "Another duh, How do I do this?" and "MORE QUESTIONS".

Here's a suggestion: To gain maximum interest in your message, treat the Subject line as you might if you were writing a newspaper headline. In the newspaper industry, the whole article is written, then the headline is created. This way, the subject refers directly to the content of the article.

I rename the Subject line on those messages with ambiguous Subjects, but I'm sure the author can do better than me.

Just a thought. Thanks.

Thank you, Ian. I've bit my finguhs many times wanting to say the same thing. A poster does himself, the current readers, *and* those searching the archives later on a great service by doing this.

If the poster can also keep each post to one issue rather than a list of all things he's currently dealing with it helps tremendously.

Thanks, bossnut!

I tried urging this early on in the BB's because it would make the use of the archives easier if not meaningful. After 3-4 tries I got razzed. Oh, well! . . .

Ian, what are the chances for initiating a pull down menu for a "principal" subject category: brakes, bus a/c, roof top vs basement a/c etc. with a secondary topic line? Obviously, the last choice would be "other" LOL!

I think lots of excellent informative posts are "lost" to searches as a result.

Great idea, Ian. When we get lazy again and the subject lines start getting unspecific, drop us another reminder to keep the "house in order". It carries more weight when the boss of the board says it.

Love this board.

Hi Captain,

I wasn't levelling criticism - quite the opposite, actually! As I suggested, try writing the body of the message first, then try to create an appropriate Subject line.

But if you're tired and it's impossible for you to think, that's where I'm happy to jump in with a Subject line update!

And if you're sound asleep in front of your computer for 3 hours whilst surfing BNO, your wife is going to react something like Mrs. Bus Nut Husband Obsessed over in the Flea Market!

Thanks Ron for your input. Without dedicated hobbiests like yourself, this web site and the bulletin board would be nothing. I appreciate the time you take to update all of us.
