What is the difference a Litium battery and a glassmat battery? |

Quick answer, Chemistry, Glassmat or Absorbed Glass Mat Batts are typical Lead Acid chemistry, usually with a more viscous acid media. Lithum Batts are a totally different chemistry. |

Jerry, It all depends on how diligent you are with care and feeding of the batts. The best resource I know for explaining this complicated, but important, subject is Dave Smead's 12V series of Books. www.amplepower.com. The books may be marketed through a distributor, but there'll be a link. In the archives you'll get a lot of good info and a lot of bad - much of both categories of info are useless, as to the good, mainly because of insufficient detail rather than the accuracy of the particular quote. If budget isn't an issue, just throw money at the batt system and put up with poor performance and (sometimes) major inconvenience in which case, redundancy is a 'good thing' |

Jerry, Lithum is not rechargable, has long life, and low current output with a flat discharge curve. AGM's were basically replacements for gel-cell applications. Rechargable, high capacity, good output curves, higher charge/discharge life, and can be used any any position. That said, they may have developed a rechargable and high capacity Lithum battery recently, but it would take a military budget to buy them. Chuck Newman Oroville, CA |

More than half the lithium batteries out there now are rechargable. Cell phones, laptops, video cameras, etc virtually all use them. More specifically, lithium ion batteries. But they (rechargable lithiums) are virtually unavaliable for personal use in larger sizes. They do power some experimental electric vehicles and stuff like Mars rovers, but you can't buy them at wal mart! One day soon though. Toshiba just recently announced a commercial lithium rechargable that is able to be recharged to 85% in ONE MINUTE !!! http://www.toshiba.co.jp/about/press/2005_03/pr2901.htm Their first published application will be electric vehicles.
