We have a 1979 MC-9 with an 8V71, we are on the road right now. A few days ago, we noticed a strange ticking noise coming from our engine. It seams to be coming from around the pully area where the old factory A/C (that we removed) was. It is not a loud noise, just a tick tick tick tick ticking noise. Any ideas? Could it be serious? Please help!

Before you go ballistic..

If the engine's running fine otherwise, check the belt for the
fans. The slow "click click" may be only a fan belt that's
decomposing...

take a long thin stick and put a spounge on it with a rubber band , then put the end of the stick where you think the problem is comming from ..the other end with the sponge to your ear.the sound will amplafi up the stick.. this will determine closer to where the problen area is for a better diagnoses...becarful of the belts when engine is running

A ticking noise complaint is usually the air compressor. The noise will travel through the engine so it may sound like it is something else. The way to see if it is the air compressor is to let the air build up until it shuts off, the noise should disapear at the same time, if not, you have a real problem!

John MC9 - We checked the belt first thing this morning, and it didn't look bad, so we took it off, and ran the engine a few minutes, and the noise was still there.
Geoff, - We ran it until the air compressor shut off, and still heard the noise. What do you mean by "we have a real problem?"
Any other thoughts or ideas?
Our bus always seems to know when it is a weekend or holiday to have a problem!!!!!!!!

If it was the air compressor, it would not have been a 'real problem.' That engine should run smooth and quiet without any 'ticking' noises-- sometimes you might hear a clyinder firing a little harder than the others but you should not hear a rattle. Maybe you should run it by a charter bus company and ask them if a mechanic could listen to the noise. Try not to go to a truck repair shop-- 99% of them don't know how to work on a 2-stroke Detroit.

To check for clicking or snapping noise from belt is hold a bar soap on both "V" side of belt while running or if not running...rub soap on straight length. If it does not go away while running then it something else.

FWIW

Geoff,
Guess what? I got to thinking after I wrote that I had not listened to it while the air compressor was shut off. So, we started it up ran it until the commpressor shut off, and sure enough, noise stopped. So we repeated 4 more times, each time same thing, when air compressor shut off, noise stopped. So, we drove to a store, while we were there, one of the security guards came up, and asked what year our MC9 is, turned out he is a part time bus driver and his friend is in charge of maintanance at the local Grayline. We will stop by tomorrow, but everything points to it just being the compressor.
Thank you to everyone who wrote and helped!!!!! We will let you know what happens.

Jerry, your name is Sojourn for Christ, do you have a ministry? What kind of bus do you have?
