I have located an Onan quiet diesel gen set, model year 2004, 10 KW. This fellow has it as a take out (who knows why) and (fully) reconditioned. He also has a one year warrentee on it. I probably will not be using it for at least a year, so the warrentee is of no use to me. The question is this.... Should I be worried that it is reconditioned? Price IS good $6500. Vern (in RI) |

Katrina Gen? If you have a means to set it up at home with varying and rated loads for for a few hours you should know if it is ok. Hook up a couple of house air conditioners to it for a load.Do some voltage checks while you are doing this or have an experienced electrican do it for you. Or you could have an ONAN service center check and verify it, probably for a fee. |

Im no mechanic, but i would be real curious why a diesel motor that normally is good for 20,000 hrs of service whould ne to be FULLY reconditioned after 1 yr. |

Hi Vern, I have the 10 KW Onan in my Eagle. I had to replace the ECU after about two years of use. This part alone was over 500 bucks. I have had other problems too. I would spend the extra cash for a new unit with warranty and wait until you are as ready as you can be to purchase it. I'd bet that the reconditioning of this unit included a fuel filter, air filter, oil filter and oil. Ask them what the hour meter says. hth, Tq |

For $6500, why not look at the Powertech with the small CAT motor? It is fully enclosed like the Onan. Onan makes some good gasoline generators, but I think they are overpriced for diesel. Brian Elfert |
