Ok I searched the archives and don't find the answer I'm look'n for. I'm look'n at a '90 Flexible Transit Bus as the ebay ad show it. I need to know if the enging would be right or left hand rotation? I e-mailed the seller and his answer is "I don't know" all he knows is he drove it home with no problems! Thanks Bryce aka Busted Knuckle |

All the Flxible Transits I have seen are V-Drive, making the engine a LH rotation. If the seller doesn't have a picture of the engine compartment you can't see if it is LH (V-Drive) or RH rotation (T-Drive). --Geoff '82 RTS AZ |

Thanks Geoff and no seller doesn't show the engine compartment and doesn't know which transmission it is either! I wouldn't know the difference just from looking myself not having any experince with either! Most of my bus experince is from yer "over the road" coaches I know MCI's,& Setra's inside and out and have experince with Dina's, Eagle's, Neoplan's(OTR), Prevost's, Van Hoole's & (but don't tell nobody) a LAG! LOL I've also worked on various "skoolies". I was thinking about that transit on ebay because of price for a spare engine to have around the shop! From my experince it's usually if ya got one lay'n around you won't need it! but...... you get the idea! Tahnks for the input! Bryce aka Busted Knuckle |

Geoff, couldn't he just ask the seller if the engine is sitting sideways or not? Richard |

Looked at the bus on EBay....from the engine access doors on the rear hatch and the radiator placement on the driver's side and after looking at the inside pics it's got to be an angle drive. Very similar to a flexible I dismantled 2 years ago. Mine was the older fishbowl style but otherwise, everything looks the same as to engine oil dipstick access and radiator placement, , also flat floor clear to rear. I would be very careful to make sure it has the 6-92 as the 6-71 looks the same to the novice. You could check the Flexible historical web sites to verify. Oh and be sure to have someone competent check the frame behind the rear axle...Mine was incredibly rotted out from effects of salt and age. Fortunately, I bought mine for a parts bus and completely dismantled it with chisels, a torch and various tools over two to three months. |

Again thanks to all, who answered, I'm not sure asking the owner would do any good. I asked about engine rotation and which trans it had and his response was "no I don't know." Also in most of his replies he posted on EBAY he clearly states more than once "I don't know, I just drove it home from OK and it did just fine!". So I just dropped it there and asked for some help from those who seem to know more than I do, when it comes to transits! And on having someone check it out I believe I'm competent for that as I own a repair shop where we keep several commercial charter bus fleets on the road and other vehicles also. (thanks for mentioning it though as I might not have been) Also all I wanted was the engine its self if it were right handed and the price stayed low, but if its a lefty I have no use for it! It's probably a 6V92TA with an Allison V-730 transmission. The rear end ratio is likely one of the following: 5:31 , 5:13 or 4:56 It is a left hand rotation engine and will not be usable for anything other than a coach setup for V-Drives nor will the transmission. Rule: If the engine sits crossways its a V-Drive and most likely a left hand rotation engine. There were a few Flxibles built with Cummins right hand engines with a Voith-R V-Drive transmission of the era. But if it's a 6V92T engine is has the V-730 transmission (lefty) Forget any idea of stuffing it into a coach designed for a T-Drive, Won't work! Too much un-engineering required. |

OK, I'm going to jump in here and throw a monkey wrench into everybody's comments: Fresno Area Express had 20 Flxible Metro transits, V-drive configured, with 6V92TACs bolted to Voith transmissions. 1990 models, just like the one Bryce is looking at. All were RH-rotation Detroits. That's right, RH rotation. The Voith handled the reversal in the V-drive adapter bolted onto the output side of the gearbox. Sooooooo. . . things aren't always as they seem!! RJ PD4106-2784 Fresno CA |
