When I look at buses for sale online, I often come across professional conversions for sale.

Why do half of them look like bordellos on the inside?

Do people actually like high gloss laminate cabinets, mirrored ceilings, rope lights, and shiny chrome in their coaches?

I don't know when I've ever seen a picture of a regular house decorated this way on the inside.

I plan for my conversion to look like a nice house with no mirrors, chrome, or brass that isn't necessary. I'm hoping I can afford to not have any plywood showing.

I own a whorehouse on wheels. And I like it, but did not at first. I think I can answer your question.

My first conversion was very austere. It had a monotone gray interior with laminate and corian surfaces. A bottle of glass plus and a cloth was all it took to keep it looking nice. We liked the look of it. The only concession to glitz was the rope lights around the windows and down the ceilings the length of the coach.

Fast forward now. Our original coach had a fire and when it was obvious the repairs were going to take months I got a wandering eye. By accident I looked at a coach that was just traded. It was dirty, dinged up here and there, the paint was chipped, but it had excellent systems and except for dirty it was not worn or abused.

The problem is that it was the exact opposite of what we would have chosen if we were to sit down and spec out the colors and decor. It was glitz taken to levels beyond anything we were comfortable with. But, the layout and features and systems were first class. And we were getting it well below market value. Despite the price I wouldn't even dare make a decision unless my wife approved and when she saw it her reaction was exactly like mine. It looked like a whore house, but a tasteful whore house.

We've had it 21 months now. We like it. We like it because it is completely different than how we live. We live in a post and beam home, and our bus is "uptown". For us guys that live in tee shirts and jeans it lends a little class to us. The abundance of mirrors are a pain to clean, and I have to take off my shoes and wash the grease from my hands before I climb in it, and I like it.

I like it so much I painted my Series 60 in colors that are coordinated with the coach color theme. Hows that for ostentatious?

My primary flight instructor had a business card. Of the claimed "problem solving" attributes, in addition to "wars fought and revolutions started" was listed the specialty of "virgins converted" No mention was made respecting "Prostitute to wife transitions!"

Probably only because he ran out of space on the card!

Brian,

I've noticed this mostly in ads for high end new sticks and staples and wondered the same thing. These things are butt ugly on the inside and outside as well. It is a complete mystery how anyone could feel comfortable inside these things. They are downright spooky. Mirrors on the ceiling, really strange??

Even worse is the exterior paint schemes. What's with all these wild curves and swirls?? The only thing I can think of is that, since they are just big ugly bricks, these paint schemes are an attempt to camouflage the ugliness.

I never thought anyone would do these things to a bus.

Hookers become tired of the wild side of life, find some really nice guy and settle down into the routine of domesticity. You didn't think they worked the trade forever did you?

While young and frisky it was for cash, and as they mature and settle down they do it for 3 bedrooms and a two baths in the suburbs, and a new SUV in the driveway.

God Bless their Souls, they are The Salt of The Earth, and I love them all, and therefore try to enrich their coffers on a regular basis.!!!

Cheers...JJ

That got me to thinking. Am I the only one that thinks the weird paint schemes now offered might have something to do with the demographics of the market? The folks with the money to buy these are the former flower children. Doesn't that make sense?

And the Bordello type interiors are just psychedelic designs created by someone on a little acid?

For a guy trying to build the whorehouse on wheels, let me tell ya, its alot of work. Glossy laminates, overlay doors, rounded corners on every cabinet, wall corner, flip down tv, etc. I have found that it takes more time and thought planning the layout and the construction of all components. Often times you build things twice, the first time its wrong, the second try it works.I am enjoying the process immensely, learning from the bus converters and trailer converters, and the folks on this board. Thanks for your help. MArk

No, Jon. You're thinking of skoolies, which have a charm of their own.

Have you ever wondered what would the perception be if those exterior swirls were painted on a Lexus?

Wouldn't go over very well in most highbrow neighborhoods; the neighbors would be concerned about getting mugged.

And the interiors? Well have you ever been in one of those 'McMansions'? They're equally scary. Taste don't come with money, that's for sure.

No, John, these are not flower children, these are wealthy old farts (I'm an old fart so I can say this, but definitely not wealthy!). No self respecting flower child could ever come with some of these hideous designs. This has to be a highly trained designer of bordellos and large gambling establishments (You probably wonder why I didn't spell it out, well, the board won't let me post using that word? Go figure?)

I think the whole thing is the typical American "Follow the herd" mentality. People are just afraid to look a different. Shoot, I'm really pleased when my old 4104 looks like nothing else in the RV park and most of the others look the same??

When a person takes one of the great looking old style buses and makes it look like a modern sticks and staples it defies all reason. However, it's his money and his choice. And, these paint schemes cost tens of thousands of dollars?? Big money to look ugly, really weird.

In a couple of years, they'll all be out of style and then....well, gotta get the next newest thing...Methinks it's all a marketing scheme...just like most fashion stuff....in fact, would bet on it ( were I a betting man)...:-)

As FF says, "do it your way"

Just enjoy the trip!

For years most of the "high end" coaches were sold to companies , not to rich folks as today.

The deal was if you were high enough in the Corp , you got a key and could use the unit (never moved) and leave NO PAPER TRAIL, as you would in a hotel or motel.

That's why so many of these conversions are advertised with Extremly low milage from new , yet most have rebuilt engines.

The actual road use was not enough to keep a DD healthy, so many died from neglect as an annual run to some convention was insufficent .

This explination came directly from a Custom Coach Ohio VP.

The cat house look still has apeal to some, who dream of days gone by.

Ya know, I made some fun(?) of the situation a couple of posts above....but this thread has a serious side...... the manufacturers might take note of from folks who are "part" of the scene.

My wife and I have asked the same questions, to each other, as we read the Family Motor Coach monthlies, and other publications that a friend seems to want to entertain us with.

The ads, from front to back are loaded with high end coaches. I'm old enuf to remember the days (as are many of "us" :-) ) when the high end coaches were appealing to most all who saw them. Today, for us at least, they are a turn off, as are the graphics and really ugly (again, to us) paint schemes.

We were elated to know that there are others out there who don't care (abhor) for them. Thanx Brian, for bringing up the subject!!!! And a special thanx to you Ian for letting us ramble on about it.....and many other subjects of interest and controversy.

And as always, as my friend ( yes) FF says, do it your way, and God speed!

FWIW :-) :-( :-)

Thats one of the reasons I am buildig my own so I don't have to live with the glitz. I appreciate quiet, understated quality, not what the new high end coaches seem to be about.

Of course I didn't have the $ either to get what I wanted.

Jim,

I agree with you, I don't have the $$ to sink into that glitz even if I liked it. And, as RC says, in a few years the style will change and make them look dated. All in line with the great American plan to sell new ones.

Mine is stock outside and I'm trying to make the interior appear pretty much like small boat. Simple but space efficient with a darker wood finish. I really don't like the very light colors used in sticks and staples. I can use darker wood because all my windows are still intact (Blocked inside at appliances).
