It’s time to buy our refrigerator. We are looking at the Norcold 1200LR. We have two young kids and will full time soon, that’s why we want such a big one. Hard to swallow the price though.

Does anyone have experience with this unit?

The best price I can find is from:

PPL's RV Parts Superstore
10777 Southwest Freeway (Highway 59 South)
Houston, Texas 77074-9829

Can anyone give me input regarding doing business with PPL?

Thanks

I've done quite a lot of business with PPL and they only screwed up once, and they promptly corrected the error. They had good prices and fast shipping. Have an extensive RV hardware line. Sorry, have no experience with Norcold...have a Dometic that works great. PPL also has (had?) best prices on new tow bars and baseplates.

Bill,
Here is s link to Kearbey's RV. I have bought quite a bit from them and generally found their prices to be hard to beat.

For what it's worth...

That double-door freezer looks like a neat idea, but you
can't stuff anything too big in either side. That center freezer
divider takes up room..

Have you considered two used, standard RV refrigerators?
The doors can be switched to allow side by side usage.
They would cost the same as one new one, you'll have
14-16cf storage, double freezer capacity, and redundancy.

There's one for sale here on the ads section, btw.

Bill, we've had both Dometic and Norcold, and we think that there is a lot of difference in the construction of the two.

Our Dometic would flake rust down off the boiler insides and block the flame every trip we took. It didn't last long before the boiler rusted out. The electronics were unreliable, as well, so we replaced the board with one made by Dinosaur.

We found that it took a couple of hours after we turned it on before the refer did much cooling.

We replaced it with a Norcold, and aside of having to get the gas mixture set right, it cools faster and works fine with the factory electronics. And there is no rust flaking, so I'm optimistic that it will last awhile.

I did see a post complaining that customer service didn't amount to much, but nothing has led me to check on ours, yet.

For what it's worth.

We used to live near Houston, Texas where PPL is located. They have been in business there for a long time. I use to buy most of my RV parts there as they had good prices. If you are ever near Houston, they have a very complete RV Parts store as well as their huge RV consignment lot...I've even seen some Conversions there. I would order from them for what its worth.

I agree. My experience has been much better with norcold. I've had several over the years.

I too would advise using Norcold. I boondock 10 months out of the year (fulltimer) and when using Dometic's, when it gets really warm, above 80, I always had to make sure my Dometics were on the shade side and lots of the time had to install fans blowing on the system to cool it down faster in order to be of any use at all!

I now have a Norcold and never have to worry about it. My Ice cream even keeps frozen now, hardly ever was with a Dometic.

Hi everyone, I don't know which make is best but we just bought a side by side from Steve, "Brand-New" Its up to you guys to negotiate with, But we paid allot less than he is asking. Great guy to deal with.

I think he has some std type units as well, if you are looking for a smaller one. Just from experience we live full time in our coach, and have had no trouble with the Demotic Fridges, As for Demotic themselves they are the terrible to deal with.

P.S. I have seen used older units for sale that were more than I paid for this new unit!

This is the first time I have seen someone shopping for an RV refrigerator and no one has suggested getting a household unit.
