The MC5A I'm interested in buying has only one weak link, according to the owner. He installed a 17" Eagle clutch behind the 8V71 and is not happy on pulling a long grade....it slips, according to him.

I've spent hours searching for any information on the adjustment procedures for this clutch and can't even find a home page for Eagle Clutch.

Who is the manufacturer and how might I get a tech bulletin on the adjustment procedure?

Would any of you use this clutch vs. the twin disc?

Help!

In order to clarify the item in my query let it be understood that the clucth Brand is "Eagle"..not to be confused with a clutch from an Eagle bus!

Performance car buffs use the Eagle "Talon" clutch because of it's ability to engage and stay engaged without slipping under tremendous torque loads.

I've been led to believe that "Eagle" brand clutches were initially a product of Long Manufacturing which was sold or absorbed by "Eagle", the company which currently manufactures the clutch in question.

I've researched for almost a month and cannot find any reference to the 17" clutch for the DD
8V71 application. Where the current owner of the bus found this thing and whether or not the flywheel was 'resurfaced', even though the engine is represented to be a 'crate engine' w/less than 5000 miles on it.

My feeling is that if the current clutch isn't working properly it should be changed, no matter what is required to make the installation right, before I purchase the bus.

Your thoughts?

If that's the way you feel, then that's your answer!

I think everyone that's ever owned a bus will tell you that
you should take it to a reputable bus garage for a complete
inspection, prior to purchase. These are very, very expensive
toys. Unless you have an enormous pile of cash that you
don't care about tossing away, have a bus mechanic look it
over bumper to bumper before you make any decision to
purchase. Especially so, if you do not have the tools, expertise,
garage, or health, to do the work yourself.

The MC5 is a nice 35' bus, and is fully capable of having as
many costly problems as any newer 40' model.

NcBob it could just be that whoever installed it doesn't know how to properly adjust it, I highly agree with John on having a reputable bus garage check it out! Busted Knuckle

The 17'' single disc clutch was used on an Eagle
Bus w/an8V71w/a 4spd trans. They were also used on
the GMC 4104.T^he two clutches are not interchangable,as there are differances in the disc splines and pressure plate springs. The MCI
4spds cane w/a 15'' double disc clutch assy.

Well, finally the seller and I sorted this out. The clutch is the same one used in the 'Eagle' bus. The flywheel was resurfaced when the engine was built.
What they didn't to was adjust the individual pressure plate fingers to specs after the engine installation...just the free play adjustment. The bus is going to MCI in Des Plaines when I go to pick it up and the MCI folks will make the determination if it's just an adjustment or if the clutch needs replacement...and a solid inspection with the seller picking up the tab!

IMHO if the Seller is willing to go to this degree to make sure everything is Okey-Dokie he's a guy I want to deal with and I've made a deposit on the bus.

In about a month she'll be adding more beauty to our beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.

Thanks for all your comments guys...you're great!

Bob with a deal like that you can't lose! I still say it's probably just adjustment! But you've found one heck of a good fellow selling that coach to first tell you about the problem, and second to pay to have it checked out! After all if he wanted to just dump it with no worries he could've sold it "as is, where is" or, put it on ebay took the $ and ran! I think you found a great deal and seller!
