We are contemplating moving to the country, which would mean parking our bus on dirt. What is the best way to keep the little critters from taking up residence in our coach? Any and all advice appreciated. Thanks in advance. Luis |

Fabric Softener Dryer Sheets, those little perfumed things you throw into the dryer to soften the clothes. Few live further out in the boonies than we and since I started using them in Oct I haven't seen a mouse or rat yet. I'm going to put them into my antique trucks next because they work so well. |

I did all that once. Heard a noise and found a family of possums took up residence in one of my bays. Decided to close that one all the way after that. Here's what I have had and seen here in Florida.. Spiders everywhere inside and out. A few American Roaches ( Big Ones! ) but only come inside when it rains a lot. get in through door seals somehow. Birds... Finches especially like to nest in air intakes, electrical boxes and on top of engines and under the coach on top of tanks. Squirrels, Nest and camp on engines and chew through hoses and wiring with plastic or rubber covering. ( They just love Motorhomes ). Frogs, Green Tree frogs in a/c housings, fans, door jambs, window slides and more. Lizzards... Chamelions and assorted imported vesions are everywhere and get into everything. Ants... micro-minature sugar ants, wood ants, fire ants, black ants, red jumbo ants. They come up wires, cables, tires and hoses. German roaches. ( small brown ones! ) Once you get them they get into everything. Fumigating with the smoke type bug bombs is about the only short term cure. They breed in the millions almost instantly. Love microwave oven electronic displays or anything warm or wet. Field Mice/Rats. Nest anywhere they can and make terrible messes. Almost impossible to get rid of and impossible to clean up after as the smell stays around for years no matter how much you clean. They will chew through screens, wood doors, floors and rubber to gain access. I have seen roof vents chewed through by both mice and squirrels. Snakes.. Loads of them here in Florida.. Grass snakes, green snakes and a lot more. Many times I have opened a breaker panel and found snake skin wrapped around the wires. They like 1/2 inch openings and will nest inside junction boxes. They also will burrow under tires and under the coach to make nests. Gotta watch for those odd holes in the ground when moving stuff too! When I was in St.Croix a few years ago I found that they have BIGGER roaches than imaginable. The american cockroachs there are called "Brown Mahogany Birds" and they will chew on humans while you sleep. I have a scar to prove it! They also make airborne attacks on people day or night.. Them's some nasty creatures.... Scared Yet? |

Yellow jacket wasps critters drove me crazy (or even worse?)---they were crawling around the black window wipe seals on the side vertical slide windows and getting inside. One was resting (scheming?) on my bed and I kinda accidently rolled over on it and it stung me three times on the back of my right knee. Ouch!....it hurt!! Sosssss.....I wanted quick revenge. Chased it round the inside of the coach until I pinned it againt the side glass with my trusty K-bar utility knife. Was going to cut it into small pieces with the razor sharp (or even more!) blade. It waren't good judgement. Seems I pressed a little too hard and ...CRACK!!!.....I busted the glass. AUUGGGHHHHHH!!!!, was I pis...ed!!! And....I still can not remember my account number code thing to post this. AUUUGH!! again!!! |

My 2001 parking spot, This went on for 6 months, even the stray cats learned to walk on top rail of chain link fence. I filled it all in with 15 truckloads of dirt after it dried....

Luis - Whatever critter you see attempting to get in..... If you grab it and bite it's head off, the others will see it and won't go near you or the rig. Word gets around fast, even among bugs! Buy yourself some "Ambro" ant killer, and some "Home Defense" spray. Spray around liberally (wear a Ted Kennedy T shirt?), and sprinkle the Ambro on any ant hills. For the interior, use Borax (or Boric acid) powder inside cabinets, and a product called "Terro" (a liquid containing sugar and borax), for ants, inside cabinet corners, or wherever ants are entering.. The Home Defense is a fast, all purpose bug killer that lasts for weeks. It's a contact killer. The Ambro is an all purpose ant killer, also works on spiders, roaches, etc.. It's a granule that's carried back to the nest, ingested by the Queen (not legal in Canaduh), and kills her and her sex toys. The Borax and Boric acid powders are ingested, inhaled, or absorbed in the roach, ant, bug.... and it dries out their insides. It's also carried back to nests and does a job there as well. When other insects eat the dead bugs, they die also... The Terro works the same way, but is sweet and the ants go for it quickly, taking it back to their Gal... I'd start off doing that head thing. If it works, you'll save money. |

well at least no suggestions on yogic levitation to keep the bus of the ground so all those crawling critters couldn't gain entry. Now how do I get the cat to stop pooping in my shoes, everything has to be a trade off and never a perfect solution! |

Take the cat out before you put the shoes on. (Jeez, that was a no-brainer) |

The best way to rid yourself of any unwanted pest is to just use the bus! keeping it parked especially on grass or dirt will invite the pest to homestead. Using it regulary will more than likely keep them out and gone for good! As I convert mine, it sits on concrete until the parking pad is done and the biggest nuisance I have encountered is wasp. They seem to go into every hole or crack on the outside. Never have had any problems with the inside! Take the bus for a cruise thru town and the wasp are even gone! Ace |
