Just about to change my gear ratio from 4.56 to 4.10 but the pricing I got is odd. I was quoted at a gear specialty shop $895 for differential and $570 labor. Then I requested another quote from an outfit closser to me and they quoted me $2250 differential and $1100 labor. This does NOT include bearings that may need replacing. Anybody have any idea which is real? Both shops specilize in this field. They only work on heavy differentials and transmissions and both have sterling reputations. I live in Southern California and would like to know if there are other shops here that work on heavy gears worth a look. Thanks. |

James, call Paul up in Fresno, at Valley Truck. He will do you a good job at a fair price. 800-598-5715 DO NOT let Drivetrain Specialtes do the job (out near Santee...???) he's got a good reputation with some locals but as far as I'm concerned he's a ripoff. I know the hard way...I dropped my pumpkin off and at that time he quoted me $1000 to just renew everything necessary... no ratio change... then took my pumpkin apart, called me later and said it would be twice the price due to damaged gears, etc, so I said screw it and picked the thing up. When I got there all the spider gears were missing and he said they were so bad he'd tossed then (without asking) Bad news!! |

If you are talking about a Rockwell/Meritor V-Drive the second price is closer to reality than the first one. The 4:10 is high priced and next to impossible to find used. The 4:56 is worth something if it is in good shape, these are the same gears we run in our RTS's and our group always has members looking for taller gears. --Geoff '82 RTS AZ |
