I thought I had posted this earlier but can't find it, so if I screwed up here it is again.
I contacted Camping World and inquired about Steer Safe for my 4905A. She informed me that such a unit is not available. Does anyone have any information of a steer safe installed on a 4905?
Also does anyone in Northern Ore or Southern Wash. have a Steer Safe on any vehicle? I would like to look at one.
Thanks for taking time to answer.

Bill -

I remember talking to Steer Safe at the FMCA show in Pasadena either last spring or the year before.

Their rep told me that because of liability issues, they will only install their units on buses AT THEIR FACTORY.

Ponder this thought: SteerSafe was developed for fiberglass, sticks, staples and glue RVs - most of which are frequently overloaded on their flimsy chassis.

Add a crosswind, or just the bow wave off the front of a bus or cab-over 18-wheeler, and they quickly become a real handful to handle.

Has a passing Winnebuggy ever bothered your 4905 going down the interstate?

Point is: because of the amount of development time GM put into engineering the suspension on these coaches, this kind of addition, IMHO, is totally unnecessary. Providing, of course, that your suspension is in good condition.

IF you have a front blowout, which is rare nowadays, the OEM power steering has more than enough assist to help you control the coach until you get it stopped. Especially if you have a later model 4905 with the Sheppard p/s box.

Of course, if you put a little 18" custom steering wheel on, you'll have to work harder. . .

Again, IMHO, the 4905 is one of the finest riding air suspended coaches out there. It's long wheelbase and eight air bellows, coupled with the front and rear anti-sway bars, are a great example of good commercial engineering.

(Did you know that a 4905, with it's 2-foot longer wheelbase, turns a tighter circle than an MC-9? That's what I mean by good chassis engineering.)

I'd find something else to spend my money on. . .

Thanks so much, RJ for your HO. My bus drives and rides just great. IMHO I thought that a steer safe would help stop any wander that I sometimes get on certain roads. No?
Thanks again for taking the time to share some of you knowledge.Bill

To take care of the wander you might need to tighten up your steering box. My wife would not drive the bus as you had to herd it down the road. Once I tightened up the steering box, she'll drive it again.

Bill -

Any minor wandering may or may not indicate a problem.

As Rod suggests, you might check the steering gearbox to see if some slack exists, and adjust per "DA BOOK".

Also check all the little U-joints and splines in the prop shaft from the bottom of the steering column to the gearbox. Some slop here can cause a little wandering.

The simplest and cheapest is to check your tire pressure. Are they equal?

Rag or radial tires? Rags wander more than radials.

If you're getting a little wander on higher crowned two-lanes, especially a slight pulling to the right, try holding the wheel steady w/ just enough pressure to counteract the pull, no more. Sometimes that's all it takes.

If you're getting the wander in the truck lanes on the interstate, it may be that the pavement is worn in such a way that it's acting like RR tracks. Best to get out of the lane completely, if possible.
