We are getting ready to pay for our tabs and were wondering if our price is outrageous or normal? We have an '83 MCI9 in MN, and we were sent a $440 some dollar bill for tabs. We have RV plates on it. Is this out of line, or normal?

Thanks!

It looks like they're charging you for a recreational vehicle
weighing between 39,000 and 45,000 lbs...... As if all the ice
and snow isn't enough to kill ya', they bury you with taxation
and regulatory fees, too...

Too bad.. tsk, tsk.

Niles and I must be neighbors, but I live in a different county, so instead of the $24 he spends it costs me an outrageous $60.

Craig from Gumpydog.com has a MC9 registered in Minnesota. He has collector plates instead of RV plates and the cost is a fraction of RV plates.

The state originally rejected his application and said RVs don't qualify, but he persisted as the law basically says any vehicle 20 model years old is eligible. You do have to have a second vehicle registered with the state that does not have collector plates.

I would be a bit scared to do this personally. I would be afraid the vehicle could be construed as commercial as the plates would no longer say RV on them.

Some state's "antique" plates (also "collectible" plates?),
restrict mileage and usage to parades, special events, etc.
How does one's insurance play into that? All questions
should be totally explored before trying to save a few
extra bucks.

Just being able to get RV plates for a one-time commercial
vehicle, is fine with me. I'm grateful for that.

Oregon licenses motorhomes by the foot, with the tags good for two years. A 35 footer is 313.50 (156.75 per year), while my 7 at 40 feet is 351.00 (175.50 per year).

This is quite a bit more than car tags here ($27.50 per year) and goes to support our state parks and such.

Pennsylvania - 1959 GMC 4104

Tags & Registration: $81 /year
State Inspection: $60 /year

Also own an antique car, and a 1984 car with a license plate type designated "Classic" (15+ yrs old). The antique tags would be a bit too restrictive for my bus use, but I've thought about the Classic tags for her. Insurance for the '84 dropped a lot when I classified her that way.

Minnesota's rules for collector plates say only that you must have another vehicle registered with the state that is not a collector. No rules on when, where, or how often you may drive it. It just says not for general transportation.

Now, the website does say recreational vehicles may not get collector plates, but Craig at Gumpydog says the actual law has no restrictions and he got a collector plate for his bus.
