I have a 8-71 that seems to start on time every Time easy until we wanted to go out of town this week end,now it just belchs white smoke for the time the starter is active and maybe a a turn or two after. It seems to "want to start but refuses" any ideas I'm new to this bus thing I just bought it 3 months ago. |

My best guess is you have accidentally tripped the emergency stop switch. If so, you will need to reset the flap that closes the air intake. -- Don |

Diagnosing from afar is tough, but this sounds a lot like cold weather could be contributing to it. Below 30 deg or so this condition is not unusual. Crank it as you have done, let it sit 5 seconds and hit it again. Most of the time if it can start, this will make it start. If it's too cold for this, preheat with a block heater or a quick shot of ether. Jim |

Jim, Good idea. Living in Arizona, I don't tend to think of cold weather problems. However, when we've traveled to cold places, I find that cranking for 10 seconds and letting sit for a full minute usually gets the ol' 6-71 to light off on the third try. -- Don |

Once when I left my 5303 at a shop the guy tripped the emergency stop and when he was trying to start it we were getting black smoke due to the mixture being so rich. White smoke is usually a cold weather thing caused by some cylinders not fireing good enough.Smoke should go away after warm up. A weak or bad battery will also give you a lot of white smoke when it can not turn the motor quite fast enough to get it going. Just my experience, Charles |
