Attached is a picture that shows both the Carrier regular air conditioner and the new low profile units. While the old style does look ugly like a FF carbunkle, the new units I think are almost good looking.

That looks like it could be 4 -6 good inches difference in height. Do you know if there any difference to the interior profile? Does the new style fit in the same size roof opening?

Thanks,

Tim

I wonder if these are more efficient or something to reduce the size? The regular RV AC units have some dead space, but not enough to reduce the size that much.

Has anyone seen any reason to choose one AC brand over another? The most common I have have seen are Coleman with Dometic and Carrier the other two big ones.

They 7.5 in. high and fit a 14 x 14 in. opening.
We have two for our Coach. They come in a 13,500 btu and 15,000 btu. Freeblow ceiling assemblies and Ducted Ceiling assembly. no heat strips at this time

My observation?

The low profile Carriers weren't available when I was in
so much hurry to buy AC units (I ended up with two 6mo
used Colemans $250ea)....

What I didn't care for with the Carrier, was the price
(BIG $$$), and the fact the roof condenser fan vented
upward, through the roof shroud.

Most home units are like that, but home units get used very
often (summer and winter), and are placed in secure settings,
not under trees.. and when/if they are, there are shields that
can be placed over the fan to keep leaves and twigs out...
and the rain/snow/ice, out.

Since our RV may not get that much heavy use...and since
I can't predict where we'll be at any given time during travel...
I just didn't like the idea of garbage falling into the fan opening,
possibly causing problems (The RV dealer felt the same way,
oddly 'nuff).

John is correct!

I have allready proformed warranty work on carriers that had branches stuck in the condencer fan blades! Easy fix if you catch it in time before you burn out the compressor!

Carrier has a good system with a not so good layout, give them time, they are still new in the RV end of the biz.

Their sister company TRANSIT COLD is however, one of the leaders in the bus and mini bus ind.
with very well built systems!

I have Coleman low profiles. You can see them in the picture if you click on my profile above. The pics aren't real good, however. I think they are 10" instead of the standard 13", and yes they fit the standard 14" opening. The unit in the picture really looks tight, and I agree looks pretty good.

We have the Coleman Mach 3 with heat. They are the low profile unist only because of our stock height being so tall to begin with. Are they more or less efficient? Can't say but i WILL say I have yet to use all three of mine at one time with ac or heat. Two will definitely keep it comfortable during the day and one can almost be completely shut off during sleep. I said almost! We DO keep the one up front on at that time and it still gets chilly in the back!
the same goes for the heat. Once the inside is up to a comfortable temp, then off one goes!

I have a question for Nick, is anyone making a rooftop unit as a heat pump yet that you know of?

Pat,
Carrier also makes heat pumps. I have a 15K model and it heats well until about 38° and moderate insulation. They cool well, but with some dark red paint on the side, no insulation in one wall, and parked in the sun, it wasn't exactly what I'd call cool. I expect much better this summer, as the insulation is installed. They seem to start really easy with a bunch of lights, a small 'fridge, radio, and whatever power tool running at the same time

I found them on eBay, new, from an RV dealer in FL. I believe they were around $675 with shipping and had the free-blowing inside part included. The seller also sells them via phone order. Mine are not low profile, but the seller has them now. If you need any info on where I got mine, let me know.

I wonder if the low profile units could have a mesh or some type of screen installed to keep debris out of the condenser fan.

Hi Pat

Carrier will be out with a low profile heat pump very soon if it is not out now. Underwriters lab was testing the unit a month ago.

They also have A drain system for evaporator condensate that runs through ceiling and down inside wall to drain under coach. They will send you the kit (adaptor) free to do this but you provided the 1/2" I.D. hose.

I talk with Doug Barton at Carrier.

Your web pic show good progress and great work. I enjoy your site and check for progress often.

Tim,
The interior pieces for the low profile and the regular Carrier units are almost identical. There is a different part number, so they can't be interchanged, however the physical envelope is the same. Yes they all fit the standard 14" x 14" hole. AS someone else just mentioned, just 7 1/2" tall! Thats very good for a coach that's tall to start with.

They both come in ducted and non ducted style. the ones made to use with coach ducting are about $100 more, and for that you get a remote control with thermostat. The thermostats can be used with an independant heater. I plan to use mine to run my webasto style hydronic heating system.

The carrier compressors are very quiet, the only noise is the fan and air movement.

Prices are coming down on the low profiles as backlog demand for this product is filled. I just paid $700 each including shipping. They were $1000.

Thanks Nick, I'm going to check them out, I am having second thoughts on the basement AC's...they are going to gobble the storage space up, with the new low profile units they are much more appealing!

David thanks also, and yes I would appreciate that link also.

Hey Paul thanks, I've been watching your site too those locks were snazzy, I've slowed down the last month, there is so much going on here, I hope to get back to full time bus converting again starting next week.

Hey Jim where did you order your units from?

As always thanks for the great input!

Pat

I ordered them from this place in florida. They are family run, and were diligent in keeping me happy when the shipping co made a mistake.
