I have a 1989 XL Prevost in the conversion process. I removed the large A/C compressor and there is a lot of room there, right next to the engine. I would like to move the engine batteries there and possibly even install my house batteries there. Any comments or ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ray D

Chuck MC8 (Chuck Lott) moved his back that spot, and
it seemed to work out nicely!

See here:
Chuck's Battery Move

That leaves the front battery compartment free for the Propane
bottles, or house batteries! I plan to do it the same way, so
like me.... you'll have to contact Chuck for the details.

Ray- I have an XL motorhome shell and just to the front of that is where the batteries are originally. Go for it.

My last coach had the four bus batteries and six house batteries there. It is a good spot because it helps unload the weight from the front axle. The only problem is that engine heat in that area may prevent the use of AGM batteries for the house. There has been mixed results in that regard. I could not use gel cell in that area because of the heat.

My coach had OTR air and we still fit the batteries there.

Thanks for the help, I was worried a little bit about the heat. Does anyone know what kind of batteries would work well? Would a heat shield help?

I used group 31's from Sam's Club. I paid about $60 eachfor them. I haven't had any heat issues with the batteries. It's not any different than having a battery under a car hood,IMO.

I tend to agree with Chuck with respect to wet cell batteries. The fluid circulates and thus can tend to dissipate heat. That type of "cooling" is not possible with gel cell or AGM.

My LeMirage converison has all the batteries next to the engine on the opposite side from the radiator. Factory batteries were there.

Factory batteries were and are wet cell batteries, and the original 1150 batteries are mounted down low in line with the oil pan seam. They are in an area where the temperature is relatively low compared to batteries for the house which are typically mounted above.
