I am looking at a 4106 and wondering if it could be a 2-valve head. Can I tell short of removeing a valve cover ?

According to Da Book (pgs 7-9) the model number will tell you. Of course that only tells you what it was when it left the factory.

For example, if the number is:

7087-7X41

And the X is a '1', then it was originally a 2 valve head. If the X is a '2', then it was originally a four valve head.

There is supposed to be a dataplate on the valve cover, although I could never find one on my engine. The model number & SN are stamped on the right rear side of the block, however, I could never find mine there either. . .

BTW, it should be pretty easy to pull a valve cover off. That is what I finally did to find out I had a 4 valve.

The 4 valve heads are call dog-bone heads. Look at the head and you will see that there is a raised mark on the casting that looks like a dog-bone.
