Check the gen head breakers or fuses...
Check the gen head brushes..

Take a 12 volt battery and momentarily hook the leads to one of the 110 volt outputs and remove it. ( zap it ! )

This "flashes" the field and recreates the residual magnetism needed to make it work.

Then start it up try it for output....

Bet it works then....

I used to have a Generac 1750 generator sold by Sears-- low hours and only used occassionally for field power. One day it quit working (low voltage output), I called Generac and they told it was the windings and wasn't worth fixing, and to buy a new one. The engine still ran good, but it had a tapered shaft so it wasn't good for putting a pulley on it and doing anything else with it. Since then I have used and worked on a number of air cooled portable generators and unless you can make one good one out of two broken ones you might as well just throw the damn things away when they give up their short lives.

And...

Most self excited 3600 rpm generators need some residual magnetism to get going, They also usually have to be spun at or near the proper rpm before they will have output. Many also have 2 capacitors located in the power box that are sized to provide the excitation at a given frequency. If either of the caps are bad one or both of the outputs will fail. Each 120 volt output winding will have a capacitor in the circuit.

Tim-- just go to a few construction sites and ask, and you will have a lifetime supply of generators to fix!

Especially if they are using Generac!
