I am picking up my bus on Friday in Southern VA and then heading to Philadephia. From Philly I head west on the PA Turnpike to OH and then on through Indiana finally all the way to Minneapolis. The PA Turnpike website says I should expect to pay $55 in tolls. Is this right? $55 for a 43 foot 3 axle bus? How much can I expect to pay on the OH Turnpike? I was going to use my I-Pass to pay tolls via EZpass, but it turns out my I-Pass is for a car only and won't work for a three axle RV. I suppose I could use my car I-Pass,but I could get in big trouble for toll evasion. Brian Elfert |

should be closer to 40.00 if your worrying about 55.00 tolls wait till you have to fill up and have a 400.00 fuel bill would expect your looking at around 1000.00 between fuel and tolls to get home. Alot faster ways to get from So VA to Minneapolis than to go through Philly. |

You should avoid anything close to Philadelphia, unless you want to visit or love ridiculous traffic. Heading west or Northwest would be better. If you are determined to go that way, go to the PA. turnpike web site for the info you want.If your coach doesn't look like a motorhome yet, they will want to charge commercial rate. |

PA Turnpike charges Weight, then by Axle. You are scaled entering the booth ( never apply breaks in this area as it affects the scales ( adds weight)) No extra for commercial |

I will be picking up an item just west of Philadelphia or I certainly wouldn't go that way. The extra fuel and tolls is cheaper than shipping a large item. I'm just shocked that the toll for the PA Turnpike is about half of what the fuel will cost for that route. That is like a 50% gas tax. I'm figuring my total costs will be about $1000 to $1200 to get the bus home. Brian Elfert |

Bus got discount as bus on toll bridge going into Philly. Buses may get preferential rate. |

get a big sign somwhere on the front saying private coach because once the highly intelligent bored toll collecters see your rig they tally your amount before you hit the window to tell them its a motorhome, and either hate too or cant change it once rung up. |

There is no differnce in tolls on the PA Turnpike between a bus and a motorhome It is based on Class or scaled Wt. Then by # of Axles. You do however get some discount if you are a bus on certain bridges where a MH gets charged more. |

Just head north and get on I-80 once you are done near Philly, especially since you will need to go North eventually. A year or so ago, the turnpike decided to raise the tolls as it hadn't been done for several years. So they figured the rate of inflation for all the years since the last toll increase, added it all up and slapped it all on, with the usual BS about how they are upgrading many portions of the road. |

The PA turnpike's website has a toll calculator feature, if you know what Class of vehicle it is rated at. (My GMC 4104 with 2 axles is a Class 4) http://www.paturnpike.com/toll/tollmileage.aspx I am right off of the Turnpike's Northeast extension (Exit 31 Lansdale) NW of Philly. I spent several years living in SW Virginia and am quite familiar with the drive you will be doing. I assume you will be coming up Route 81 and not thinking about 95 through DC & Baltimore. |

Yes, I had been planning to take I-95 through Washington. That is the way Google Maps directed me. I kinda wondered if they area might be pretty congested. I just ran the directions through Mapquest and they have me taking I-81 all the way to I-76 insteaad of through Washington and it is only 5 more miles! I know which way I'll take now. Brian Elfert |

Staying off of I95 north of Baltimore will save you a bunch of revenue enhancing tolls. Funny thing is, my 30,000 GVW 2 axle straight truck goes for the same amount as cars in Maryland. |

The Baltimore Route 95 path also goes through the Baltimore tunnel, which prohibits propane tanks. If I recall, Brian's Dina is not converted yet, so he may not have propane tanks to worry about. But it is one more toll. I have to take the beltway around the city. Brian: what town are you headed to west of Phila? |

I am supposed to be picking up a diesel generator in Malvern, PA on my way home. Malvern is about 25 miles west of Philadelphia. I talked to the seller of the generator on Friday and he is supposed to send some pictures so I can make a final decision on it. I am going to take I-81 up to I-76 instead of messing with the Washington area. Mileage is a whole five miles more. |

81 & 76 are definitely your best option. Malvern is about 20 miles South of where I live. The Malvern area is suburban sprawl, but still far enough outside the city to avoid the downtown congestion. Highways like Route 30, 100, and 202 are also pretty manageable. If there is anything I can help you with locally, please let me know. I'll send a separate email to you with my contact info |
