What would be the best gps for my laptop? I would like one that talks. reasonably priced. I eventualy want to get a Tom Tom or simular Gps but for now I will have to settle for the cheaper laptop version. I want to buy the complete package, program and usb or fire wire antenna |

This is what I bought and it works great for the money. Just use my laptop on the center of the dashboard... http://www.tigergps.com/gagps18sefor.html Dave... |

With the least expensive Garmin Street Pilot, you can use it with or without a PC... Check the pawn shops for deals on the better models, but some new ones can be had for around $200 or less (Walmart). |

I vote for DeLorme Ron. I have had a number of different ones, I got a Garmin in the car, but the DeLorme cannot be beat by my evaluation if you got a laptop already, this is my third DeLorme, someone saw and watched the others work, and talked me out of them on the spot! If I recall correctly I got this one for just under $100 on Ebay, brand new. Highly recommended! Some homemade light shield on the screen helps you see it at a glance better |

Ron - MS Streets and Trips mapping program is easy to use, has voice, and you can buy it with a GPS unit included for around $100 bucks at Walmart. You can add "CSV" files to it, to list "low clearances", all the Walmart stores, dump stations, or whatever turns you on. The data files are easy to make, or you can download them over the web. Some are here. (Garmin products use the simple CSV files also) |

>>>> What would be the best gps for my laptop?<<<< I have the CoPilot 8. I had the CoPilot 2000 and it was great for its time but 8 is even better. It seems to talk better than the old unit and it responds to certian verbal commands (suggest a headset/mic). Can tell it to go to sleep so it wont talk. >>>>I would like one that talks. reasonably priced.<<<< I thought it was priced right. Got mine from the GPS STORE. they have a good section that talks about ALL the units out there. They all have good points, some have bad. Not all are the same, you have to decide which is best for YOU. Read up on it. >>>I eventualy want to get a Tom Tom or simular Gps but<<< So far, not much good said about Tom Tom except hits high price. >>>for now I will have to settle for the cheaper laptop version.<<< Why would you want to pay double? The laptop versions are great and I think do more. >>>I want to buy the complete package, program and usb or fire wire antenna<<<< UHM, they come that way, Cap'n Crane |

Ron ..I would say MS Streets & Trips is the best bang for you buck if you have a laptop. I think the one John is refering too comes with a USB GPS. So the upgrade next year will be like $30. Works good in both the US and Canada. Ron |

Ron, I too want a gps and did a lot of internet shopping to find one with a screen big enough to read without my cheaters. Then I heard about the laptop programs and decided that was the way to go. I looked at Microsoft and Delorme and the only big difference, that mattered to me, was the size of the print. The Delorme is bigger and easier to read without glasses. The Tiger GPS listed above looks good but the ad doesn't say anything about onscreen display etc. So far the Delorme is at the top of my list but I'm still shopping. I can't find out the info I want on some of the units. They all give a bunch of advertising hype and no specs. I really would like to see several units in operation. I guess I'll have to wait till Bussin 07 and look around. I would like to know what you decide on, and how well it works. Ed |

"the only big difference, that mattered to me, was the size of the print. The Delorme is bigger and easier to read without glasses." I'm not trying to sell anything, but..... You can adjust the font size, pushpin size (and type), and more, with MS Streets. I can read it very easily without my glasses, setting the map font to a larger size... |

Ron, I have two GPS systems. One is an old one from Rand Mcnalley that works off a serial cable and a plug to the Keyboard input on the laptop. I liked it a whole lot until someone swiped my laptop. The other one I just bought off eBay for $29.95 without the mapping software. It's a Holux GR-213U with USB hookup which will run on my standard desktop tower, which I use instead of another laptop. I also use MS streets and Trips but have considered moving to Delorme. The unit is only about 2"X1 1/4" and sees up to 20 some odd satelites at a time. My old one would only see 12. Being as cheap as I am, I figure I got the best deal I could for the money. Good Luck. Dallas http://www.busconversionstuff.com/eventpage |

Crane, I too will end up with a Tom Tom when I'm finished with the bus, I've watched simulations at their website, with the 3D view and approach, it doesn't get much better from what I've seen, compared to many other GPS systems Tom Tom is not that expensive! One other thing I like about the DeLorme is I can use it on the road in any vehicle we have. What I really like is the virtually unlimited access to many phone numbers, the new DeLorme can just about pin point any address, and if you need a certain phone number on any street it will give you every phone number, house address, and who lives at every address on the section of street or road that you select.....its tough to beat that! Crane, Sorry you feel negatively about the TomTom. Not because I sell it on this web site, but I have two of the 700's and can't do without them. The superior TeleAtlas maps are very nice. The only negative I have seen with most all-in-ones is that the maps aren't updated regularly enough for my liking. Mr. Jewett, sir, please just let me know when you want to test out a TomTom and I'm happy to send you one of mine for a test drive... and I don't mean around the block, I mean on your next extended trip. This offer applies to anyone I know who wishes to test-drive a TomTom. Ian www.busnut.com |

I just read the consumer report on the 2006 Delorme Earthmate GPS LT-20 W/ STREET ATLAS and allthough they only give it 2 1/2 stars I believe I will get that one. I found it for $89.00 shipped to my door. They say there is some accuracy issues with this unit but believe there is a downloadable fix for this issue. It has a ton of features over the MS streets. Other posts from users have rated it much higher. I will be leaving for my summer tour in 2 weeks and will give you guys my report on it. |

i first got the Delorme street atlas package but could not get it to work and when i contacted Delorme to ask why i reached a fellow that only talked as if he was a rocket designer and gave no info that either the computor guy that was with me could understand, so we tried again the next dayand reached a lady that when asked if there was or was there any maps of Canada , well that was not a good thing to ask as she said NO, NO,and gave the impression that her nite job was teaching pit bulls how to attack and bit.now i have a Garmin 2610 street piolet and trying to figure it out. so if you want a sutem that has maps of Canada then Delorme is not the system that you want to have. mine is sitting in a junk box some where and there it will stay. |

Well I will be darned, you are correct Mel, I had never noticed that before. Canada only has highways, not city streets on it. Just to be sure, I then opened Mapsource, the street level for Garmin, and guess what, no street level detail there either! I just got a Garmin 2620 yesterday, will check it out as well, since it comes with a hard drive in it with all that installed. You don't suppose Canada is keeping that a secret do you? |

Hey Ian I try not to be negative, it is a struggle at times but..... I have heard a lot about the TomTom, also have listened to the commercials. I have rated it at about a mid level unit, but the price? Maybe it is in a compact case that makes the price so appealing. As I said, they all have their pluses. I did say that! However, what is good for one person, may not be such a shining light for someone else. And I did mention that they needed to find a sight that talked about them all, not just one. The truely informed consumer will most likely make the best purchase for their needs. That said, Have a good day everyone Crane |
