I have a Bendix AD-2 in a MCI-8 that needs rebuilding. The bottom casting has "12vdc" molded on it. Evidently, the heater wire was not hooked up when it was replaced. I would like to hook it up after I rebuild it but, if it is actually 12vdc, 24vdc would probably "smoke" it. Does anyone know how to tell what voltage the heater element requires? Maybe the impedance(ohms) of the element could be measured? Does anyone know what this value should be? I'd rather not replace the dryer if I don't have to. TIA, John |

I found the info in a pdf on bendix.com. FYI, 12vdc=2.0-2.8 ohms, 24vdc(60w)=8.1-11.1 ohms, and 24vdc(120w)=4.0-4.6 ohms. John |

Even if it is 12 VDC you can always add resitors to use it "as is" with 24VDC or maybe "just change the heater element part" without the expense of creating a proper 12 VDC supply. |

If the casting is stamped with 12VDC, then it is 12VDC. You also have to measure the resistance while it is cold. I put mine in the freezer then measured it. This test is required for the thermo mechanism inbedded in the casting. Looks like you are going about it the right way. Were you able to find descicant and the kit? |

I couldn't get a reading hot or cold. When I openned it, I found out why. The thermostat was never soldered to the heater element! The element measured 2.7 ohms so it is 12vdc. I guess that is why the 24vdc wire was never connected to the unit when it was replaced by Dean's Coach! It has worked for several years but I want to make it right before I hit the road fulltiming. Luke has the parts as does napaonline.com. The heater element is not replacable, AFAIK, only the thermostat. John (Message edited by cjm on April 23, 2006) |
