Hi folks,

Over the last number of months I have noticed that there have been dozens of messages posted on THE BOARD and WoBN's The Flea Market where message authors are sending other viewers to a specific link.

Examples are Jim (Skyslayer) and Brian Brown (Blue velvet) referring to their own web sites, but neither post them in the link section. Either could then just say, "I've updated my site with new pictures - go see it on the links page".

John w. roan (Chessie4905) suggests in a thread that we should check www.chromewheel.com for decent prices, but the message is in WoBN's The Flea Market and the link will be lost forever in a few months. Likewise, Chuck Lott (Chuckmc8) suggests we look for replacement glass at www.curvedglassdist.com/busglass.html but I don't see that anywhere in the BNO Links.

The BNO Links can be the world's largest link page associated with our hobby. I purchased this particular links script so that anyone can place a link into it on a self-serve basis.

So next time you leave a message referring to a particular link you feel comfortable recommending to a viewer, how about taking a minute to fill out the "Add a Link" form on the BNO Links page.

And those of you who are looking for a part or a service, please refer to our links page before asking your question. There are several recent referrals to Rich at Int'l Bus & Parts, to Luke at US Coach and to David at Southern Oregon Diesel, but all these guys are listed in the links and all are spectacularly helpful, resourceful and fair in their dealings with bus conversionists.

So, take a moment and consider this resource and how helpful it can be in the future if we all start populating it. Don't forget this bulletin board's archive feature was useless for the first few months and no one understood why there was a search feature for so few messages, but look at it now!

Random Friday thoughts. Thanks for perusing.

The Devine Wind blows our way again- thanks Sir Ian as I was not even aware there was a link page on this remarkable place of informaion exchange, let alone how easy it is to contribute useful referals too.

The pressure! There is so much pressure here! It's difficult
to take this amount of pressure!

Somehow, I've never noticed that link. Damn, I must be going blind. :-)

Ian, should I go nuts adding links that I've found, or should I just email you where they can be found. There's lots of useful links that I've found over the last couple months.

Ian, goes to show how the "fancy" looking choices on a site get ignored! I myself make it a habit to TRY to ignore the flashing, blinking, strobing ads found everywhere (other than here..... thank you!) So I guess a "line link" may prove to be the best to get us old fogies to see it. Perhaps sub link under a fourth folder under utilities?

The way the links are set up is interesting with the reportability feature, but a cool feature might be a user feedback. Kinda a links rated comment section perhaps with a numerical rating? Dunno how hard it is to do so, but could prove interesting.

Hope you are not overwhelmed with the change 'o life. (retirement, new business etc.)
BTW, what is the business, if I may be so bold as to ask?

JW-S if'in you have your own web page you could always list and organize the huge collection of worthwhile links there and link it to the above mentioned maybe? I am betting you have all the no how to do that kind of thing and use your web page that most of us pay for with our internet but don't know how to use (not like me~as of yet; it was only last month that I stumbled on the fact that to make a link you just copy the address and paste it where yo want by doing Ctrl & v at the same time). Hope this suggestion helps my worthy friend!

I heard Ian was planning on using his retirement to organize a bunch of wayward modern day "gypsie types" upgrade there mobility ability too explore the Western Hemisphere and share there observation with the world for the rest of cybertime. Don't know for sure if this is true or if I just made it up!

Truth hunter,

Actually, I already have a site up with links and free bus conversion hosting but Ian asked me not to post the link here.

I work for one of the top 500 web sites (according to Alexa), so I have lots of resources at my disposal. I tend to recycle old machines that are too out of date to use for production servers, for personal use. :-) We're deploying servers with dual 2.4Ghz processors and 2Gb RAM. I have a few perfectly functional machines less than 1Ghz and only 512Mb RAM that work great for little projects.

I prefer to use my own servers, rather than some other hosting place. Most other places don't do things as well as I do, which is frustrating. I do a lot of IT consulting, which means I'm frequently working in someone elses environment.

My links area is rather basic, as I just threw it together for myself. No tracking on hits, no categories, no pictures, just text about what it is, where I found it, and the link to the destination.

Since more people read here, it would be more worth while to merge my links in here, rather than trying to maintain two seperate lists. I'm not clear on what the policy is for putting in links for things we've found, that we're not responsible for. The submission wants my info, so I don't want to appear responsible for someone elses business.

johnwood,

There is a rating system that I will turn on once the links page is more populated. It would look funny right now.

Retired after 20 years at a neighbouring Fire Department as a Staff Officer assigned to the Training Division.

New franchise is a "The UPS Store" in my home town of Uxbridge, Ontario, Canada.

store

truthhunter,

I won't link to other link page compilations. RJ Long submitted 3 huge link pages and some day if I retire retire, I may just start clicking away at the computer on those links. Meantime, I have a whole web site to re-arrange.

JWS,

Submit as many as you'd like, but don't hurt yourself trying. As you can see by this web site's bulletin board system, most people ask for a link here anyway... and they almost always get an answer.

On a whim one day, I thought I'd put the links page in after 8 years without one, for no particular reason, except maybe to prove that one might not always be necessary on - and I am truly humble whenever I say this - the most populated web site in the world. You know... everyone's here already - who's left to link to?

I do the same thing. If it's bold, stands out, or whatever, I'll miss it every time. I actually went hunting around like a moron after Ian posted it, and was starting to write a message saying "What links area?" Then I noticed it staring at me.

I know many customers do the same thing. We've put text links on particular web pages, for example if your password doesn't work on a login page, you can click for password recovery. Too many users didn't even notice the link, so we made it huge, bold, and bright red. People still miss it. It's always fun to write them back. "It's 3x the size of the rest of the text, red and bold and says CLICK HERE IF YOU FORGOT YOUR PASSWORD!" :-)

It's always better if you realize your mistake before you say something publically. Then people will laugh with you, instead of at you. :-)

Larger boxes fell off the brown truck,
and grew into little brown stores!

For all your busnut printing needs....

BNO goes Brown?

I loves the UPS store!

enough?

happy coaching!
